Iran leader: Bush will be tried

NASSER KARIMI
Associated Press
Saturday September 15, 2007

TEHRAN, Iran - President Bush will one day be tried in court just like deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein for his involvement in the Iraq tragedy, Iran's supreme leader said Friday.

Speaking to thousands of worshippers during the first Friday prayer of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that Bush will be called to account for the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

"A day will come that the current U.S. president and officials will be tried in an international supreme court for the catastrophes they caused in Iraq," he said.

"Americans will have to answer for why they don't end occupation of Iraq and why waves of terrorism and insurgency have overwhelmed the country," he added. "It will not be like this forever and some day they will be stopped as happened to Hitler, Saddam and certain other European leaders."

(Article continues below)

Khamenei mocked the U.S., describing the recent congressional testimony of the top U.S. officials in Iraq as a sign of weakness and the failure of American policy in the war torn country.

"More than four years have passed since the occupation of Iraq and today everyone knows that America has failed and is frantically looking for a way out," he said.

In their testimony Gen. David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker raised allegations — denied by Iran — of Iranian meddling in Iraq by financial and military support of militias and insurgent groups. They warned that the U.S. was already embroiled in a proxy war with the Islamic republic.

Despite U.N. sanctions and efforts to isolate Iran internationally, the country is flourishing, maintained Khamenei.

"Today we are in a better political position compared to four to five years ago," he said. "We have moved forward economically and the spiritual preparedness and happiness of our nation has improved."

"A nation like ours, without an atomic bomb and not as wealthy as these other powerful governments, has foiled a whole series of their conspiracies and forced them to give up and withdraw," he added.

The U.S. accuses Iran of secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons and has called for further international sanctions against the country. Iran denies the charge.

Iran and the U.S. have not had diplomatic relations since Washington cut its ties with Tehran after Iranian students stormed the U.S. embassy there in 1979.

The United States is supposed to provide the means to restrain the powers of its President, but I haven't seen that the US government even has the brains to tell him "no" about anything. Try him, try the entire U.S. Congress.

The problem lies i think in Bush's membership of the super elite skull and bones and this may intimate that he is carrying out the agenda of a very very powerful set of near aristocratic and very wealthy elite...

Iran leader: Bush will be tried

OK, I'm all in favor of people being held accountable for their actions but where will the trial take place. If it's in Iran under Sharia Law then GWB is a dead man*. If it's in a neutral country with the UN running things then he stands a slightly better chance of escaping with his life. Just make sure that Tony Blair is in the dock beside him.

Ed Almos

*Note to the Secret Service, this is NOT a threat to kill the president, just a guess on the outcome of a trial.

I propose in Iraq by popular consensus, failing that then the Hague will do. Blair will be shackled to the bench by his neck.

I don't know why the Hague even can make deals that it will not prosecute for war crimes. Bush had such a deal made, and is now immune. This was the same court that ordered the hangings of Nazi officials. It has now become totally meaningless. That's Bush's function in the world, isn't it? To destroy the functions and meaning of justice.

Nice idea, but it aint going to happen.

Maybe if the U.S itself impeached him etc, he might eventually stand trial for something or other under international law, but that would only be without the weight of the US behind his back. Unless the states themselves wanted him done, they would just veto anything the UN ever said about it. Failing that, the US would have to get slapped back into the 18th century, militarily speaking, become an occupied nation, and then Bush forcibly removed by the invading force. Y'know, like in Iraq...

I dont think his standing in this whole Skulls and Bones thing would help either, veto notwithstanding. Thats a peculiarly american "old boy network" that has little influence abroad. (After all, the Uk alone is a lot older, and has many much more antiquated "old boy networks" all of its own.)

Any way you look at it, I doubt that Iran will ever be in a position to carry out a trial, unless Bush is dumb enough to get his ass captured visiting iraq or something. (having said that...dumb..maybe.. just maybe..)

Still.. we can live in hope I guess.

I forgot about Bill Clinton. Maybe you should go and look up his life history. People have cliques, its the way NT's behave. It doesnt mean there is a massive sinister conspiracy.

Dear Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,

I am no fan of George W. Bush. In my opinion, he is the worst President in United States history and only slightly brighter than a stump tailed macaque. As an American citizen, however, I do respect the Office of the President of the United States. For this reason, I will not tolerate your threatening of it. Nor will I tolerate your ignorant anti-American diarrhea of the mouth ramblings. So here’s a deal I am willing to make you: come to good old Mankato where I live and I will give you a beating so fierce you won’t have the stones to open your mouth ever again about the United States. You got that sh!t for brains?
