"What's wrong with being shy, and just when and how did bashfulness and other ordinary human behaviors in children and adults become psychiatric disorders treatable with powerful, potentially dangerous drugs, asks a Northwestern University scholar."

I just want to know how it became acceptable someone to encourage people to ignore their mental problems just because the party in question does not sympathise with them.

There's a reason we look to scientific evidence in determining neural dysfunctions and dysfunctions in general. Anyone who does not distinguish between personality traits and actual disorders is unprofessional and unsympathetic and probably guided by some idea of how things SHOULD be... when the only logical thing to do in these cases is to look at scientific evidence and act according to individual needs.

Let those of us who have problems, issues, and dysfunctions decide how the heck we want to relate to it.

My two cents.

A quote from one of the commenters on that article:

According to the DSM-IV-TR, to be classified as mental illness, the condition (i'm paraphrasing for simplicity) has to cause significant distress to the individual that it affects their daily life, making it difficult to function. The stigmatization of mental illness in this country should stop. If you don't believe social phobia exists, please, get a clue. The fact that there are (somewhat) effective pharmaceutical treatment options available does not mean their is some grand conspiracy to medicate every human being on the planet. As a physician, I will not see any additional money in my paycheck as a result of prescribing any medication. The vast majority of physicians are truly trying to serve their patients by prescribing the drugs that they prescribe.

There is a difference between being shy and having social phobia to the point where it is severely affecting your life.
