There's a profile of POLICE WOMAN star/Rat Pack hanger-on Angie Dickinson in the Jan '08 VANITY FAIR. Her late daughter Nikki, who committed suicide earlier this year at age 40, had AS, and Dickinson talks about how she and Burt Bacharach (Nikki's father) tried to raise her in the years before Asperger's was officially recognized. Bacharach had Nikki institutionalized for over a decade beginning at age 14 -- apparently he was simply too overwhelmed to deal with her unpredictable behavior.

It's a pretty stark read.
