Groups release guide to toxins in toys

DETROIT - Tests on more than 1,200 children's products, most of them still on store shelves, found that 35 percent contain lead — many with levels far above the federal recall standard used for lead paint.

Not surprised. I never buy anything mass-produced/'Made In China' anymore, and definitely not for my kid brother - there are waaaaaaay too many recalls for me to trust it. I'd rather just buy good old fashioned wooden toys and wooden versions of things... so much safer.

Yep. But then where did the wood come from and what chemicals was it treated with...and it goes on and on. I'm really careful about buying stuff MIC. Knowing they use cat and dogs for fur in such horrendous ways, preservatives/formaldehydes in their clothing, additives in their foodstuffs (see also pet food recalls) convinces me over and over to find alternatives to the purchase or make it myself.

Historically, there was more lead used in everyday, accessible items than currently. There is no hypothesis (that I know of) claiming autism has any relation to lead exposure. Lead exposure may lead to lead poisoning.

Exactly why I worry - the stuff is bad news, regardless of what affliction it leads to!!

I have noticed that some stores sell more Made in China than others. Rather than thumb through everything, I just stop going to those stores. I'm not ensured that other countries are safer or more humane (The Gap just got busted with a sweatshop in India) but I know that the Chinese have a serious problem with their products and we (US) have a serious backbone problem with the Chinese Gov't. Target has a high ratio of non-Chinese clothing.
I never bought toys so I don't look at that section.
