clip "The Government of Canada remains committed to the global fight against the sexual exploitation of children and we will continue to work with our domestic and international partners to address this terrible crime," Stockwell Day said in a news release Tuesday.
McColl said that in addition to the nine arrested men, police have active investigations into 50 suspects.
Police are appealing to the public for any information that could shed more light into the activity.
"Our main objective is to find the children," she said. Telltale signs to watch for in potential child porn buyers, she said, include obsessive Internet usage and a high quantity of storage material. Staff Sgt. Howard Kunce with Alberta Ice North detachment said suspects tended to have "vast collections."
"They collect videos. They are well sorted and well numbered."
Const. Mark Knoop, of the Victoria police force, said one of the arrested men was from that city. He is aged 40 and has allegedly shown violence toward children. Police also said one of the arrested men is from Edmonton, but no further information was provided.
Hagemeijer told the news conference that about 2,500 people worldwide are implicated in the pornography investigation, including teachers, social workers and even a swim instructor.
"The nature of child pornography is not benign and may shock some," McColl said. "There is no mistaking it for anything legal or innocent."
She added that 80 per cent of all images showed prepubescent children, including babies being penetrated orally, anally and vaginally. Twenty per cent of the images also included bondage, torture or other violence.
"In this case children age 9 and 11 are being raped, performing oral sex on each other and demonstrating such sexualized behaviour (that) it is apparent the abuse has been ongoing for a long time," McColl said. "Child abuse is not a one-time event; it is a process."
Operation Koala involved the RCMP, European police and police forces in Ontario and British Columbia, along with the Canadian Forces National Investigation Services."
