This is a clip of the news coverage of the event:

Pretty weird. I'm not sure why they thought it would work. :? I mean, blubber/fat doesn't just turn to powder, no matter what you do to it. It's too flexible and cohesive. It's designed to shake, not break. You might as well try to thoroughly stir oil into water. (Hope my having that knowledge doesn't seem scary -- I just have a mind that can well predict the physics of force + material.)

I think people have been using explosives to destroy whale carcasses for years. It even becomes a central plot point in one of Paul Jenning's short stories, 'Ambergris'. I cannot recall quite which book it was in.

lolzorz. I've heard about this before, and think onetime it went horrible wrong and the crowds watching got whale guts all over 'em.

It's the part about the engineers planning to "completely disintegrate" the whale that doesn't make sense. Perhaps they just grossly underestimated the amount of explosives? As in, by an order of magnitude. It's just funny that exactly what you expect to go wrong goes wrong.

What about spraying it with a sufficient amount of liquid nitrogen, and then shooting it with a machine gun until it's in small enough dry chunks to simply bag up by gloved hands or hand tools?
