Here is another way to look at paranoia/worry.
It is only dysfuntion if....
1) it is "unfounded"..ie,no one is out to get you and there is nothing to worry about.Do those two things generally apply to people with aspergers? Haven't many of us been bullied, lost jobs and relationships with out fully understanding "why".Does worry and paranoia seem an appropriate response in that situation? Sounds pretty logical to my way of thinking.
2)worry and paranoia are not serving a function to our survival....It's true that this can impair function, especially if they are unfounded. However, it often is not unfounded for many people who have social communication problems that involve NVLD and
ADPD, tics or stims that make them targets for abuse and preditory people. They actually seem like they may serve a group of people who are often termed "nieve" and honest by making them more cautious and allow them chances to "work out" what they are going to say to people who have power over them(bosses, social services, bullies, teachers, etc). Because I worry, I prepare more then somene who doesn't have the same communication issues I do. Because I am paranoid...I check my doors and look around me when I am going to my car at night. Wolves know the smell of a rabbit...and I smell like rabbit.(Run Rabbit,Run)
So,while I agree that to much paranoia and worry can be counter productive, making it more difficult to take some chances. My "to much" and some NT counslors idea of "to much" are quit different. They are basing it on an unrealistic illussion of danger for some NT's ,I am basing mine on my life experiences and that is NOT neurotic.
