A new study of computer gamers has found that a session in front of World of Warcraft can make players less stressed and more calm.

The study questioned 292 male and female online gamers aged between 12 and 83 about anger and stress. They then played the game for two hours and were retested.

"There were actually higher levels of relaxation before and after playing the game as opposed to experiencing anger, but this very much depended on personality type," said team leader Jane Barnett from Middlesex University.

Even action oriented gory games are relaxing... When I slaughter my virtual enemies I find inner peace 8)

I know computer games take me out of being borderline psychotic. Like, I pretend to be NT most of the time, I even look like I make eye contact * I stare at the outside corner of eyes :P * but when I'm stressed I am much more my normal self even when I don't want to or caint be. But I usually play puzzle games.

Interesting research though, and it totally kills the whole BS of 'games are making our kids violent'. Its like an outlet for the violence they already feel.

my husband would like this article... I definitely agree with "Its like an outlet for the violence they already feel." But, does it encourage the violence they already feel? I don't know what the right answer is. Is it an appropriate outlet or a negative encouragement?

They're going to have to get rid of these results. The results of this test are politically incorrect.

Yeah, despite the fact that that's what i've been trying to tell these self-righteous @^%$#% for years... but still. You wanna see me get violent, try suggesting i live without my RTS and FPS and RPG games...

My ex referred to his WoW playing as his way of keeping sane. He was always more relaxed and happy after playing for a while.

I love WoW!

I go on it everyday, and mostly all day if I am really really stressed out.

So it actually does make you less violent and calm you down!

It's the idea of slaying monsters, I think. I pretend the monsters are my worst enemy, Anna!

lots of people find that playing a violent game is calming because they can take their anger out on a virtual character without consequence. i watched a show that was talking about the topic "does violent gaming make people violent?"
games do not make people violent. it is stupid that every time something violent happens caused by a young person, video games get blamed for it. the scapegoating has to stop.

This makes total sense. I can't imagine how many people have been spared a black eye because I decided to take my frustrations out with Tekken instead.

Nice to see a bit of common sense applied.

Obvious factoid: Violent computer games have existed since when? The 80's. Violent crime has existed since when?... Is there a correllation between the two? Hmmm...

This makes sense to the hard-core additcs I know, they spend so much time playing World of Warcraft that they would not have much of a chance to go out and cause violence anyway
