I think it makes sense that the judge ordered that the jail has to see to his basic needs. Every convinct needs a bed he can lay in, a stool he can sit on, and meals that provide adequate nutrition without causing him to become even more unhealthy. If the Law is meant to apply to all people equally, its punishments should also apply equally.
That being said, in the interest of justice, his term should NOT be shortened, unless his time being inadequately provided for has caused some real damage. I hardly think it has. If the food is a problem, give him NORMAL PORTIONS and slip him some vitamins. If that means posting an armed guard to prevent a second trip to the food line, so be it! And then exercise the #$@# out of him for his own good. Throw him on a bike and make him pedal. Five years of that, and ANYONE is gonna get healthier.
The guy is in there because he made bad decisions about how to live his life. If the Law is gonna lock him up under the pretense of being able to do a better job of making these decisions until he gets his act together... I think it needs to step up and do its job.
