Why don't the schools just issue Tazers to the teachers and be done with it?

It sounds like training is the issue. Most teachers don't know what to do with kids that won't calm down when they're told to. School systems don't provide training because of stressed budgets. Teachers are required to take summer classes to keep up their education training. Do classes for controlling special needs children satisfy the requirement? I'd bet not.

In the case of bullying teachers, look to the principal as the prime mover. People in most groups follow the leader's directives, whether express or implied. The ones that don't are eliminated. This happened to an Aspie teaching assistant on another forum when she refused to brutalize the "problem" kids and was actually able to teach them better than the regular teachers. The school principal was the instigator and to date has gotten away with it.

This was certainly the case with me. The principal at the school I attended from ages 4-5 was the one who took me into the bathroom and spanked me on the bare buttocks for not eating quickly enough. Anytime I saw her in the halls I would be scared sh**less, not knowing if I would be punished (for behavior unbeknownst to me) each day.

Then when I was 11-12, the principal of that school helped a few other teachers restrain me on the floor quite a few times. There were a few times I was aggressive, but most of the other times I was being non-violently disruptive, nothing even close that necessitated 3 teachers holding me down on the floor.

You're right, a lot of the abuse tends to start with the higher ups, like principals. This was definitely my personal experience. Which is why the merry go round of hiring and firing staff accused of doing this sort of thing simply isn't enough. The overhaul needs to start at the top, as the changes that occur there will naturally work their way down.

School faculty members are not really qualified mental health workers. Should they have to be? When the job-description is stretched a little too far, things can and do get messy.

Schools are not psychiatric hospitals and aren't meant to be. Do we bring in on-site pysch staff to ensure the restrainig is done properly? Who wants to pay for that?

I've been processed through the mental health system in my province and I've seen how it works. The idea of restraining a person is a necessary one unfortunately.

I'd rather not hear the horror stories, true or untrue. Let the people do their jobs. Of course if I struggle hard enough after being restrained, I will hurt myself. And then it can look as bad as I want it to look. And then the story can explode into crazy sensationalism.

What the teachers did breaks IDEA laws and ADA laws.
