Uh oh! Seems to me that some US troops are going to be in serious trouble. It's sad that some sink to the terrorists' level. *shakes head*

Australian TV shows footage of Taliban burning

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian television on Wednesday broadcast footage of what it said was U.S. soldiers burning the corpses of two dead Taliban fighters with their bodies laid out facing Mecca and using the images in a propaganda campaign in southern Afghanistan.

The television report said U.S. soldiers burned the bodies for hygienic reasons but then a U.S. psychological operations unit broadcast a propaganda message on loudspeakers to Taliban fighters, taunting them to retrieve their dead and fight.

A U.S. military statement released in Afghanistan said Army criminal investigators had launched a probe "into alleged misconduct by U.S. service members, including the burning of dead enemy combatant bodies under inappropriate circumstances."

"This command does not condone the mistreatment of enemy combatants or the desecration of their religious and cultural beliefs," U.S. Maj. Gen. Jason Kamiya said in the statement.

"This alleged action is repugnant to our common values, is contrary to our commands approved tactical operating procedures, and is not sanctioned by this command."

In Washington, the Pentagon expressed concern. "These are very serious allegations and, if true, very troublesome," Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman told Reuters.

"It is the policy of the United States, as well as the Defense Department, to treat all remains consistent with the Geneva Convention and with the utmost respect. These allegations will be aggressively investigated and, if proven to be true, the individuals will be held appropriately accountable," Whitman said.

The "Dateline" current affairs program on the ethnic Special Broadcasting Service said the story was filmed in early October. The footage of the burning corpses was shot by Australian photojournalist Stephen DuPont, who was embedded with a U.S. unit.

Dateline said the two Taliban fighters burned on hills above the village of Gondaz north of Kandahar were killed by the U.S. soldiers the night before.

The footage showed flames licking two charred corpses, their legs and arms outstretched, and a group of five U.S. soldiers standing watching from a rocky ledge.

Footage showed two U.S. soldiers reading from a notebook two messages that they said had earlier been broadcast.

"Attention Taliban you are cowardly dogs," read the first soldier, identified as psyops specialist Sgt. Jim Baker.

"You allowed your fighters to be laid down facing west and burned. You are too scared to retrieve their bodies. This just proves you are the lady boys we always believed you to be."

The other unidentified soldier read a second message, part of which said: "You attack and run away like women. You call yourself Talibs but you are a disgrace to the Muslim religion, and you bring shame upon your family. Come and fight like men instead of the cowardly dogs you are."

That is terrible. And personally, I don't see where Americans can possibly think that we have the leverage to say that "they" are the "terrorists" in all this. It seems the height of hypocrisy to me. :(

The US is trying to draw them out into the open to fight so we can hurry up and end the fighting there. What they should have done is gutted a couple of live Taliban fighters with a knife dipped in pig's blood and buried their bodies with the pig carcass. It worked in the Philipines about 100 years ago and it helped stop all terrorist attacks for 40 years!

It's mild compared to the actions of the "free" Government.

Unfortunately any good army needs pathologically agressive characters and bullies to work right and the work they do are likely to turn them into one, what we need to work on is effective monitering and to limit the bullying. Unfortunately for young vulnerable recruits a lot of the superiors are amongst the worst bullies and execerbate the situation. The army needs to be physical and the trooops will and should be pushed to the limit. Unless we bring in the draft which im opposed to i dont see how we can increase membership substansially though raising recruits wages would certainly help.

The US are fly enough to have little in the way of welfare or prospects in working class neighbouhoods and are continuing massive cuts in these areas while rapidly raising funds in the army, their 'colleges', advertising campaigns etc so an Army 'college' and carrer in the force is what they use to keep recruits so high and sso creating a 'virtual draft' situation amongst the working class population but them and Britain were stretched to near breaking point in Iraq etc and Bush was even considering the draft but they are trying not to resort to that because that would be likely to make the republicans to be voted out come the next election time.

They already have therapists but sex wouldnt help effectivety in war situations but companions would help them when they arent in on duty or fighting. Im not sure that the taxpayers should cover it, they should use their wages like they are doing now. The US soldiers who done this should undoubtably be punished and never work for the army again but you need to understand that we cant allow our armies to become soft or else we will be the worlds 'b*****s' and will be destroyed.

The killing of hundreds of thousands of Filipino civilians in American concentration camps was more effective than direct attacks in forcing the guerillas to surrender.

History has proven that when warfare deteriorates into mindless brutality, neither side wins. Seeing that this sort of thing is still occurring today is terrifying, especially when it's our own soldiers doing it.

I think ante has come up with a ploy to make war a thing of the past. I echo his sentiments. Sadly no one will implement it, least of all the US and UK as the biggest arms manufacturers in the world ( albeit only for charitable purposes). I sometimes think it would do the world a lot of good if everyone went into these situations and felt for themselves what happens. Some of your best friends turn into monstors, some of your biddest enemies become your best friend, and thats only at the personal level. You see childhood fears, religious beliefs, political prejudice, assorted irrational fears and infirmities and all sorts of other things come to the surface. A brief blast of fear doesn't do it, you have to live in a situation where you are isolated from people, get little sleep and can trust no-one. It does become truly psychotic. Imagine living in a flat in a neighbourhood that has an extremely bad reputation, that you are encouraging the hostility towards you and that you share the flat with 30 people who are feeling down, homesick, scared, etc.
It's easy to criticise troops from the comfort of your armchair, almost as easy as giving them impossible orders from on high.

First of all you cant expest the US and Britain to be the only two nations to have a 'soft' army and second of all the soldiers are in a bad situation but are you advocating that we totally disregard personal responsibility?

Soldiers in armies since time immemorial have done sickening things. Training to be a killer, then being amidst a loveless carnage of death, injuries, blood and guts must really disturb a person's mind.

I am a believer in reforming armies, regardless of which country or coaliation they fight for, regardless of whether the war waged is illegal or legal; stabilising or destabilising. What I think armies need are:

- A prostitute for each soldier to have sex with to keep them grounded and to have women in their presence so they aren't completely suffocated in machoness in a male dominated environment.

- A therapist for each soldier to be allowed to talk to about stress, anxiety, anger, depression or any other mental or emotional problems.

- Larger amounts of recruits so that when soldiers are physically or psychologically fatigued they have sufficient time to rest to not let the fatigue affect their performance or make them do anything stupid.

Finally, on the recruitment level of armies, there should be extensive and thorough psychological testing. No bullies or people with pathologically aggressive characters should be allowed in, and the testing should even be extended to all current army employess to filter out the ones already in there.

And now, back to planet Earth...

I think armies these days should be trained to be peacekeeping units or armed 'social workers' if you like, rather than killing machines.

Such units would be excellent at deploying relief at both natural and human disaster zones. I am a pacifist, but I do believe there is a role for our armed forces in such incidents.

Respect for civilian life should be an integral part of training for soldiers. They should be taught only to fire weapons at military targets and in self defense. Scandals like Abu Graihb, Fall'uja, and Vietnam must never be allowed to happen again, in which vast numbers of civilians were killed by US forces.

We have such units. They are called the National Guard. If we sent such units into places like the Middle East, most of them would just end up hostages. Some Cultures and sme factions are just too barbaric to to respect or tolerate peacekeeing units. We tried that kind of peacekkeeping mission in Bosnia and Kosovo, and we still haven't found all the mass graves each faction made behind our backs. Some of that could have been prevented by pure, unadulterated violence.

Most of those "civilians in kiled in Vietnem by US troops" would run around with an AK47 under the cover of darkness, or transported military supplies down the Ho CHi Minh trail or the Meekong river.

Note that the US military condemned the alleged actions of these American soldiers. The US military shouldn't suffer for the actions of a few individuals.

But even so, I don't see how people can compare the actions of these American soldiers to those of terrorists.
Terrorists commit mass murder against innocent civilians.
The Taliban fighters mentioned in the story were 1. military and not civilian personnel; and 2. already dead.

Personally, I don't think these jihadis need much taunting. Even some made-up story about an American flushing a Koran down a toilet on the other side of the world was enough to cause a riot in Afghanistan in which at least four people died.
