"God is Punishing Canada"

So, Westboro Baptist Church wants to picket the funeral of
that poor beheaded guy by saying that this is how God
punishes my homeland and its people.

I say, let them come as far as Winnipeg--only to be greeted by
thousands of Christians at the city limits. Recommended slogans:

"Father, forgive them; they know not what they do."
"There's a special place in Hell for people who soil on a family's grief."
"I admire your approach; let's see your departure."

Feel free to post with other appropriate remarks.

Those idiots should be barred entry into Canada. They are deluded if they think they are christian, everything they do is contairy to christian belief, if there is a hell, there is a special place for members of the Westboro Baptist Church.

Westboro Wingnuts topic

This is the problem with (dis)organized religion--simplistic and stupid answers to real problems. Talk about holy Lulzing--the faith community started this one long before political(nazi/fascist) and electronic (internet) groups got into this approach of blaming the victim for the crime and stepping on gouty toes.

If any of that God-fearing community are reading this: I hope your brains rot and fall out your a**holes.

Thanks for the link, Doug.

I hadn't really thought of Fred Phelps in the same light as internet trolls, but that really is an apt comparison. Someone recently posted an article on trolling here that described trolls prank calling the parents of a boy that had killed himself, and that sounds like about the same level as what Phelps has been doing. I really think this sort of behavior is crossing a line of basic human decency that may not be law, but that should be obvious. I'm not normally one to wish violence upon people I disagree with, but I might make an exception in this case. Too bad those Canadians are so polite, this guy deserves a swift kick in the ass.

According to Wikipedia, that church only has 70 members, 61 of which are all related to the minister. Why is such a small group of people getting so much attention?

One good reason: The funeral they're attending is none of their
beeswax.

Another good reason: These people live down to a reflective stereotype
that Canadians think Americans have about Canadians (that
because so few of us are Fundamentalist, Canadians aren't really Christians).

By "reflective stereotype", I mean a stereotype that Group A thinks that Group B
has about Group A.

A third good reason: They are making the same mistake PETA made when they
tried to use publicity about that murder in Manitoba for their own selfish ends.

I once told my stepfather that his mind was so closed that it had smothered. Sounds like his wasn't the only one.

61 of 70 church members related to the pastor? Jeez! How bad has their inbreeding been?

One thing's for sure, they're going to be in for quite a shock as Christ himself will be at the head of the ass-kicking lineup. After all, they don't represent Christianity, and have just as much hate as Al-Queida.

So the unifying issue on WP is hatred of Fred Phelps? I can live with that, the man is a disgrace to his religion, and to humanity in general. It's bad enough to hate because of your beliefs, but the kind of emotional harm he deliberately inflicts on people just makes me nauseous. Last time he was in Seattle I was too young to punch him in the face, but if he comes back, it would almost be worth getting arrested for. He's also one of very few people who's ever made me question my commitment to unlimited free speach, no easy feat. Now, if he can also manage to inspire some Canadians to violence, then I'll be impressed...

Unlimited free speech is not as good as it sounds. Limited free speech is good because it has limits. All manner of filth and hate-speech are held in check by the reasonable boundaries of free speech. Unlimited freedom of any kind is anarchy.

Good news! The Canadian border guards have orders to prevent these wack-jobs from entering Canada.
