Interesting article. It's so odd that it has only been found in Japan. I wonder why. :?

Because Japanese culure is very unique whehn compared to ours. "Too much" pressure to succeed can drive people insane... or into emotionless zombie carbon copies of their parents.

and for a better discussion on this. Japan does have a large amount of Autism diagnosises and some people suggested it was due to the BS social standards due to confucianism and the like, the people who are likely to become hikkis are likely autistic or something similar as they can't fit the BS mold

correct.

Confucianism does also influence Japan, as well as the a large portion of the rest of South East Asia as well.

I forgot to point out that hikkis are appearing in other East Asian nations as well-due to similar conditions I suspect.

The Hikomori phenomenon is also present all over the world, it's just more rampant in Japan. In Japan, if you're not hard working, you can't survive. Prices are atrocious in Japan... Imagine, sushi/sashimi is cheap in the gulf and expensive in Japan. As most parents work overtime, they end up neglecting their children, resulting in this disorder.

My father was in the advertisement business. Two of his co-workers, who were from Yokohama, said that if you don't make it in the advertisement business (in Japan) before you're 23, you might as well commit suicide, as there's no scope at all after that. Hence, they moved to Bombay. Not only did they end up having an excellent standard of living, they ended up getting promoted all the way up.

I have read so much about the Hikikomori issue for over a year. Here's the very interesting thing that no one thinks about, why hasn't the Japanese government done little to address the root causes of hikikomori?

The main root causes are in the school system, why they're still waiting like some sitting ducks.
