Museum defies pope over crucified frog

Quote:
ROME (Reuters) - An Italian museum Thursday defied Pope Benedict and refused to remove a modern art sculpture portraying a crucified green frog holding a beer mug and an egg that the Vatican had condemned as blasphemous.

The board of the Museion museum in the northern city of Bolzano decided by a majority vote that the frog was a work of art and would stay in place for the remainder of an exhibition.

Kinda cute, but Kermit he ain't...

Let it be.

They act like Jesus was the only one ever crucified and that crucification in itself was a sacred act.

Wonder at the outrage of showing the real murderers, rapists etc who were crucified at their time of death

There are a lot of famous paintings i find disgusting, and downright pornographic, but i don't go out of my way to make museums take them down.

I think it's the pope's job to demand that artworks he judges as sacriligious be taken down... doesn't mean the museum or gallery should obey... it's actually refreshing to see a museum in Italy of all places refusing papal demand... that would never have happened 50 years ago...

I wonder what the response would have been if the artist had used muslim imagery instead of christian? Would the museum have taken it down out of fear of violence? Would the muslim authorities have demanded the death of the artist? (which begs the question, is there a muslim equivalent of a pope?)

The answer to this is obvious, unless you are Dutch.

There is no Muslim equivalent to a pope, I don't think. Ayatollahs are like Shia popes but still not an equivalent.

Their Prophet Mohammed is revered as much at the Pope, although they allege a few more messianic qualities.

Replace the frog with an image of the Prophet, and watch Islamists have conniptions.

The only way to make it to the Pope's bedroom is to pose as a scantily clad young boy.

Uhmm...no. Muhammad is their prophet and of course is going to be revered and followed. The Jews follow Moses, do they not? Christians follow Jesus. You can't say that Moses is a Jewish equivalent to the Pope, it would be silly.

Personally, I do view this "sculpture" as blasphemous.

Anyways, not many people actually follow what the Pope says anymore.
