This is Alaska here, it basically sells a no-man's land, last frontier, hunter's paradise, what have you. And Sarah Palin has to sell that image to get the votes up there.

IMHO, it's OK to hunt, but only for the purpose of providing a meal. My father used to be a hunter as a kid, before hunting was banned in India, and he mainly used to hunt partridges. I wish I could hunt myself, but only for food that is halal (permissible by Islamic dietary law). So yes, killing of bears, wolves, etc, for no purpose but their fur... it's barbaric.

Seriously though, pictures of cute little bears isn't going to move many people's hearts. It's not going to convince them to not vote for some silly lady. Matt Daemon's comments have a fair bigger chance of that, IMO.

Part of the appeal for hunting is just a reaction to PETA and other ecoterrorist groups. Don't get me wrong, I don't own a gun or go hunting, but I also don't throw paint at people or set their houses of fire. I support the hunting restrictions already in effect, as long as hunting enthusiats aren't breaking any laws they're entitled to their hobbies (even if it is a dangerous one).

That reminds me of the famous Looney Tunes episode, where Bugs Bunny & Daffy Duck keep fighting over it being rabbit season or duck season. Elmer admits at one point he doesn't hunt for meat, he hunts for sport. So Daffy runs out in a tennis outfit with a racket saying "Tennis! How about Tennis? That's a great sport!" then Elmer shoots him, and Daffy is wobbling around and says "Eh..tennis...it's a great..game"

I only hunt food animals - boar, kangaroo, rabbit, duck, etc.
Unless there's a cull on, then koalas, camels, horses, etc. are shot so they don't eat themselves into extinction/threatening native wildlife.
But, we are long past the age of wearing animal skins to survive, so hunting for fur and trophies is pointless.

I don't agree with you.

'nuff said.

If even half of this is true then I think McCain's running mate might be Statan's secretary.

I don't think it's right to kill wolves like that. It is just cruel.

A hunter and an NRA member?
My kind of woman! :D
And I'm serious.

Those state authorized killings of wildlife are either for the long term preservation of the very species being "controlled" or for the good of another that they are feeding off of because of an imbalance.
It's still called reality and won’t be found in a bottle of paxil or prozac.
Go do some honest research.

I agree. It's mean. And certainly not strictly necessary.

However, worrying about this as some sort of moral barometer for this woman while our economy is crumbling around us, seems more than a little superfluous to me.

She is an elected official and she is going to cultivate an image that will appeal to the majority of her constituents.

There are much more important factors to be taking her measure by.

I know what you mean, the wolf is a very kind and gentle animal towards humans. Yeah wolves have attacked humans but most of the time we were trespassing in their territory which is understandable, we as humans don't like it when strangers invade out territory.

If you look at Yellowstone National Park the ecosystem took a major hit when they killed off all the wolves but when they put the wolves back in the ecosystem started to correct itself ^_^.

This is one reason why Sarah Palin gives me the creeps.
