Here is a good reason to sleep in on "Black Friday" and avoid the crowds...

Police tape surrounds a Wal-Mart that was the scene of a deadly stampede.
A Wal-Mart worker died after being trampled when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island store Friday morning, police and witnesses said.

The 34-year-old worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.

Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him......

This is not very far from where I was living in Elmont...
I used to shop at nearby Green Acres Mall...

That's harsh. He didn't even die in a manner that could get someone arrested, either. They say society is three meals away from anarchy, but I guess even Black Friday is enough to start anarchy.

Wow, it isn't even people in a blind panic. It is just a bunch of dumb ass people who can't even take their time to go shopping. They just ignored him and walked all over him, literally.

Wow. I thought that overspending to the point where you were in debt was irrational, it would seem it's not even safe to work as a store clerk anymore. I thought it was only wild animals that ran in stampedes....

This is why I stay away from stores on Black Friday. There was a near fist fight 2 years ago over a parking space at the shopping center in my neighborhood where there's a Sears and a Circut City. When I worked in retail, I was lucky in that I worked during the closing shift after the craziness had diminished.

Shame this wasn't "Jingle All the Way" or else the man would have lived and no one would have been hurt.

Here is the new york times article on it http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/29/busin ... f=business. If anyone wanted a brief summary on the topic of "what's wrong with America," this would pretty much cover it.
