I think it was pretty silly of them not to check the gender of the bear before they bought it!! !

Don't say its because they are both female the real answer is that at least one prefers males. To put it simply their sexual orientation won't let them mate.

Matting does not require an opposite sex couple, your confusing reproduction, and matting they are vastly different.

No, they really are not. Animals mate in order to breed. That is what it is for. You seem to be confusing Animal Husbandry with Human rituals. Its a noun for either of a pair of breeding creatures.
