I remember someone originally trademarking the smiley face (developed in the 60s or 70s)after finding out how it was going, much later (90s?). It's devolved into common practice, like cellophane. If that has gone through, then the guy who originally did it would have prior art, and thus the current claim would be invalid (at least under US law).
There used to be a saying in the late 20th Century...
Whenever the Americans invent something, the Russians say they invented it 5 years ago, and the Japanese immediately start selling it...

Don't worry, no one is taking it as more than a joke. The Russian government can't enforce copyright internationally, and no one that I've heard of has had any response to this other than laughing at the dolt and moving on with their day.

He's only bothering with corporations who use it, anyone else still can and he can't be arsed to do anything about it. He couldn't sue practically everyone on the net.
Suggestion: let's all trademark LOL, ROFL and LMAO, see what happens!!
