Well, Saddam and his sons were mean bastards, and I'm not sad to see them go, but where are things going from here? I guess democracy is good, I hope it works out, and I hope that not too many more people will be killed in all this. However, $1 trillion spent to bring democracy to 25 million people, isn't viable and continuing in a likewise program will bankrupt us, if it hasn't already.
A trillion spent on make-work programs such as improving roads and building nuclear plants, windmills etc. would employ people. It's not really a handout because people have to work for it, and after all is said and done we will have whatever the workers built. What did we get for the trillion we blew up in Iraq? ~4000 service personnel killed and a fireworks display that, for the most part, we didn't even get to see!
It's time to start taking care of our own. Too much money is leaving the US for energy imports, without which the balance of payments would be breakeven or better. Investment in nuclear and renewables redirects this money to pay the salaries of US citizens in white lab coats employed over here, who pay taxes over here, spend their money over here, etc.
