The article says hokey cokey, but I changed it to pokey because That's all i've ever heard it as.

Quote:
according to the Catholic Church and some Scottish politicians, singing the popular tune that begins with the words "You put your right hand in, your right hand out," may constitute an act of religious hatred.

Yeah, and we're supposed to listen to guys who think "hot damn!" when they see a young altar boy? Bollocks, somebody is overreacting...

Know it as hokey cokey. It was a fun singing game in nursery, which helped control co-ordination.

The song in its entirety was copyrighted in 1950. Sheet music can be found a little before that. it is more likely that the lyrics were derived from the songs and shouts of the hokey-pokey men (Italian ice cream vendors) and then mixed in with the lyrics and dance of the Shakers.

Not enough of an origin of "taunting Catholics" to matter.

Unless we are also banning "Ring around the Rosie" for morbidity.

And this is exactly the sort of knee-jerk religious dumb-assery that LEADS to hatred and intolerance. Its pretty hard to like a religion that does things like this.

While we are in the banning mood let us consider some other bans.

Ban one story becuase of the wicked woman who solicited murder and when the killer's mind changed she made three attempts to kill a child with poison ? That is Snow white.

Ban another story becuase it shows in a positive light a juvenile offender who breaks into a dwelling, steals food and engages in vandalism before squating there ? That is Goldilox and the Three Bears.

Ban a story becuase of the man who assults a sleeping woman by kissing her ? That is Sleeping Beauty.

I think all four bans are equally silly, I think we will get on OK without any of these proposed bans.

How about banning a song that describes the abandonment and subsequent death of a child by leaving it in a tall tree?

Rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop,
When the wind blows, the cradle will rock,
When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall,
And down will come baby, cradle and all!

My family plays this song at all the weddings. It's the hokey pokey over here. Next time I dance to it, it will be a lot more fun.

Why is everything misconstrued and twisted as being offensive these days?

I think it's rather widely acknowledged that the original Grimm's Faerytales were far from child friendly. By the way, didn't the wolf eat Red Riding hood in the original version?

No, I thought the wolf ate her grandma. And someone cut open the wolf to get the grandmother back. At least, that's how it goes in one of my old storybooks.

I was always afraid of it.
