Mini-arsenal man may have Asperger's

Quote:

By John Robertson
A STUDENT who had an obsession with firearms used his mother's credit card to spend £20,000 in a year on a mini arsenal of illegal weapons, a court heard yesterday.

Ramsay Scott, 20, a former pupil of Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh who had shot competitively for Scotland, ran up the bill with his mother's consent.

A judge was told Scott had visited websites depicting scenes of extreme violence about 1,400 times. One of his interests was the 1987 Hungerford massacre in which 16 people were killed.

Scott, of Longniddry, East Lothian, admitted a series of offences under the Firearms Act at an earlier hearing and was due to be sentenced by Lord Uist at the High Court in Edinburgh.

However, the judge was told that Scott may suffer from Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism, and he continued the case for further background reports.

Last August, customs officers at East Midlands Airport intercepted a parcel from the US addressed to Scott's mother. It was found to contain the barrel of a Glock pistol, and Lothian and Borders Police were alerted.

Scott, a student of bio-medical sciences, held a firearms licence for a rifle and silencer, but a Glock pistol was a prohibited weapon. Police went to his home and he confirmed he had firearms not listed on his licence.

Officers saw firearms, components and ammunition in his bedroom. Several knives were also recovered.

The advocate-depute, John Scullion, said there were assembled Glock and Sig Sauer pistols, and parts of Colt pistols, Heckler & Koch submachine guns and custom rifles, as well as illegal "dum-dum" bullets which expanded on impact. The dining room of the house had been used to make ammunition.

Scott said he had found a way of avoiding regulations which prevented manufacturers in the US sending the components to him, and had bought parts for "several rifles and handguns".

Mr Scullion said Scott's computer showed it had been used to search for "Michael Ryan" and "Hungerford" and "suicide." In 1987, Ryan shot dead 16 people in the Berkshire town before turning a gun on himself.

The defence solicitor-advocate, David Taylor, said Scott had developed an interest in shooting at school and competed for Scotland at under-19 level. His growing fascination had become "an obsession" and his mother had allowed him to use her credit card. She had thought they were linked to his legitimate interests.

Lord Uist said that the figure revealed in background reports was £20,000 in a year.

"which were designed to expand on impact"... all bullets are designed to expand on impact; that's how they work. Dum dum bullets are cut across the nose to break apart on impact. They're forbidden by the Hague convention.

Still, he doesn't sound like one of our representative community. And it's him that will set the 'example' of what we are to the folks over there...sigh...;)

Who else thinks too many people are pulling out the "aspergers" card to get away with crimes these days, it's bull s**t it actually discredits those with aspergers when they do make a mistake

I really don't see what crime he committed. So, he had a few weapons that the government doesn't like. That does not mean he is a mass murderer or that he intends to become one. Who is the victim and who has been deprived of life, liberty, or property? Ramsay Scott is the only one I know of in this case who has been deprived of liberty and property. So who is the criminal?

I am a computer programmer, and I have many "hacking" programs on my computer as well as manual on how to break into other peoples' computers. However, I don't do those things, and I have a legitimate interest in how things work and where security can break down. Now, will I be considered a wrongdoer if the government turns around tomorrow and forbids computers?

I totally agree with you.

I see your point, but unfortunately that's how things are here in the UK. The cities are full of scum using illegal weapons to rob, yet a guy who's followed the law for the best part and has only transgressed in a minor way will no doubt be serving a long time in prison. I don't like how things are twisted to present the story, and secure a conviction, either. So he did a search on Michael Ryan and Hungerford; so what? So have I. I just did a search on hollow point bullets, too. And 1400 "visits" to a site is nothing considering you might access dozens of pages of a site. I'm not sure about their statement on "dum-dum" bullets either. The police use hollow-point bullets, and recently filled an innocent man's head full of them. This country is really going to the dogs.

i have a mini obsession with weapons and war but due to only recently turning eighteen and having the controlling type of parents i've never been able to get any, i think he should be able to keep the weapons and stay out of prison and at the most have the guns modified so they can't be used.

there's criminals out there in this very country who use illegal guns for murder, robbery and other crimes and they're unchecked yet this law abidding bloke getsarrested just for having a few guns in his house. if some guy is standing outside your house and refuses to go who isknown for breaking into peoples homes and has a personal problem with you nothing can be done, after he's broken in and stabbed/shot you however you can then phone the police and then after however long it takes they'll get there after you've beenmurdered.

the laws in thiscountry are pathetic :x

If you don't use them, why do you have them? A manual on how to break into other peoples' computers?! Why do you have that?

I do not trust computer hackers, no matter how "white hat" they claim to be.

hackers aren't bad people, it's the crackers (as in 'crack' computers) that cause problems.

And what's the difference between hacking and cracking?

a cracker is after personal information such as credit card numbers, paswords and don't care about anyoe but themselves, a hacker would bypass the security for any number of reasons but, hypothetically, if they were to hac into a bank they wouldn't stealany money or details and possibly instead alert the security of the bank of weanesses.

hacker and cracker information
the above is a link to a website i found just for you slowmutent, it should explain things in a bit more detail.

also to stay in context with this subject i think the link shows that two people doing what seems to be the same could be on either side of the fence, you don't need to have a criminal type of mind to bypass security systems the same as you don't need to be a psychopath to colect guns.

You don't need to be a psychopath to collect guns ... but it doesn't hurt.

Casting aspersions again. At least, unlike you, I have never desired the death of my parents. Here you expressed such a wish, 5th post down. Psycho much, Jackass?

At one time I did want to hurt my father and myself. A few years ago I was really messed up, I'm not going to lie.
