A rocket carrying a NASA satellite crashed near Antarctica on Tuesday after an early-morning launch failure in California.
The $273.4 million Orbiting Carbon Observatory was designed to map carbon dioxide levels in Earth's atmosphere for at least two years.
NASA plans by Thursday to name the leader of an investigative board to determine the cause of the launch failure.
The failure is "a huge disappointment to the entire team that's worked very hard over years and years and really did their best to see it through," said Chuck Dovale, NASA's director for the observatory launch.
The satellite, about the size of a phone booth, was nine years in the making. The mishap occurred about three minutes into the flight.....
Oooops!! !
