February 23, 2009--With a head like a fighter-plane cockpit, a Pacific barreleye fish shows off its highly sensitive, barrel-like eyes--topped by green, orblike lenses--in a picture released today but taken in 2004.

Yeah. I don't think they've ever had a shopped photo on their website. It's a really good source of information.

Also watch the video because it contains more information. It looks really graceful.

Looks like that to me too... I don't doubt the authenticity of it, I just think that's how it looks... very strange...

National Geographic is indeed a reputable source, but they do photoshop pictures some times.

To my knowledge, its limited to aesthetic alterations (and then mostly for cover art), and I doubt they'd blatantly lie about something like this.

yeah i couldn't be bothered watching the video because they force an ad on you first, but sometimes it's a hoax and the publications get sucked into the hoax too.

I believe in invisible-headed fish. Great photo. Fish are extraordinary :nemo:

Someone should photoshop that pic so it looks like theres an aquarium in the fish's head, with fish swimming in it... that would be so cool...

That's my new favourite fish.

I though the nostril were the eyes to start with. That is very cleaver, eyes that can look into the mouth, and scan above.

I am not sure what they are saying 'barrel' eyes, I would say more like turret eyes.
