The structure of the buildings seems to play here an important role. When e.g. in 1992 the earthquake in Roermond (very south of the Netherlands, close the German border) happened with a strength of 6.1 there were damage on building and 30 persons were injured, but no one died.

Living in buildings built by the Romans? No they lasted.

In the Algerian quake, all the buildings built by the Canadians stood, those built by local contractors fell.

The price of kickbacks.
