Last week my mum took my phone and my brother's iPhone because we were using them at the dinner table (he was playing games, I was texting my friend), and we didn't get them back until after dessert. I don't see the problem with texting at the dinner table, I was eating my dinner at the same time. And everyone always has really boring conversations at the dinner table at my house, they always feel the need to discuss things like gardening and shopping and the weather.
Luckily we only eat at the dinner table on Sundays, the rest of the time I eat in my room and my brother and mum eat in the living room.
My mum's the same, and I agree with you. She makes a massive deal out of me and my brother using any gadgets at the dinner table, even if we do still eat.
She seems to be obsessed with having mundane conversion about what we did during the day instead, which is always the same: my mum was working, going to meetings, etc; my dad was driving old ladies to Sainsburys; my brother was at school most likely getting bored; and I relaxed at home because I've finished school.
Hearing that exact same thing every day is actually a lot less interesting than my iPhone, and in fact my mum sometimes gets her BlackBerry out at the dinner table as well, so she's a hypocrite (which seems to be a parents' job).
