This will be a long story...

*takes really deep breath* I can trace these meltdowns/tantrums all the way to preschool. This is why my mom and previous teachers/counselors suspect Aspie syndrome (can meltdowns be part of it?) Basically, they've ruined my life, and my friendships even worse than just feeling and acting awkward. I was put on useless "behavior contracts" and expensive trips to counselors, stress from teachers/principals and a seizure from too much focalin (which I clearly didn't need- I don't have ADHD!) Elementary school was hard...

Even though I haven't had a straightforward diagnosis of being aspie, I think my assumption is pretty accurate. I have a lot of the traits, and various tests online have put the answer straight in my face, but I've heard you can't really rely on those tests.

The combination of Asperger's syndrome and synesthesia that I have causes me to still have sensory overload meltdowns. What starts happening when I have them is that all the sensory stuff starts being perceived through one portal instead of being divided up into different sections of my brain like they normally are. It's difficult to explain. The only reason they stopped for a few years was because I was depressed. Isn't that nice? The only way to avoid meltdowns is through depression.

And I can relate to this story...

Yes, definitely. I was diagnosed at the age of 3, and so when I had meltdowns at school, the teachers put me on things similar to those "behavior contracts." (e.g. "When I feel like I'm going to cry, I can..." lists) Thankfully, I got out of that situation early, because I passed the GED when I was 12 and got into college. Unfortunately, I've had to take a hiatus due to the return of the meltdown. I hate that. My education means a lot to me, and I hate the fact that I can't continue it because of my own freaking problems. I really hope these therapists can help...

When I was younger I had 3 to 4 tantrums a day, but around 2nd grade they stopped. Now I only have a huge meltdown around once or twice a year, and that usually involves a huge project or deadline

All the time as a kid; very occasionally still have them but keep them more private.

Yes, I do, but it's very rare and never in public.

I still have them. They mostly occur around my father for some reason. Must be a coincidence.

Actually, I do have meltdowns, but hardly ever, and if I have a public meltdown, it's never to the point of being a "tantrum." My meltdowns are usually fairly mild.

Very rare, they never have been common, but were more common when younger.
