Asperger's Syndrome/Autism Blog? :)
Here's my story.
For most of my young life, I relied on "aids". These were adults that would help facilitate my behavior in school. At home, I would have speech therapy. I had a few friends in Kindergarten, keeping some of them in the First Grade (I didn't even know what the word "without" meant at the time). One of the adults told my mom a story of how my two friends talked to each other. One suggested that they pretend to play with me but in reality, I'm on my own. My other friend refused. I would have my friendship troubles, but they weren't always occurring and were typical things.
In second grade, I befriended a boy who had the nickname that sounded something like "Zawbi/Zavi". I never knew he was autistic until I was in the eighth grade. During second grade, we would share snacks and color in coloring books while my aid encouraged me to play with other kids in a game of kickball. One time we carpooled and he played a Princess game on my Gameboy (I was slightly surprised that he was unfazed by the fact that Ariel the Mermaid was on the Gameboy screen). Sometimes I would go away from my typical group of friends to try and befriend another group that happened to be interested in horses.
In third grade, I would still play imaginary games with one friend that I ended up de-friending for a stupid reason (don't want to go into length about this, but that's when I learned the word "grudge") and did stupid things on the computer (I learned how inappropriate the Internet can be because I was so naive before then. I was always cautious of what I did after that and look at some Internet material with disgust).
After that year, I transferred from a public school to a private school. In fourth grade, I learned I was autistic. My mom didn't tell me directly at first. My friend told me I was autistic (I didn't know much about the disorder. For all I knew, autistic people constantly stuttered) and then another girl confronted me, saying "Your friend keeps saying you have autism but you don't." I was confused, so I asked my mom, who confirmed my autism. From fifth to seventh grade, my life was relatively normal because I forgot about it. Once eighth grade hit, that was all I could think about. Now my eighth grade year is over and I'm putting everything behind me.
