Well I'm Canadian and we always diss Americans even though we're more like them than anyone else. A lot of Americans are quite critical of the sheeple in America though. There are sheeple everywhere, but most have a better shepard.

I'm a first generation American, I was born in Russia. My relatives back in Russia sometimes comment that they're surprised that my American schoolmates don't have horns...

I know George Bush is a war-loving moron, but he isn't the only person in America.

I'm just ranting a bit right now.

That's incredibly 2 dimensional thinking. The irony is that the people who say such things about Americans are the ignorant ones.

Yes, there are some bloody nasty Americans, but there are also some horrible people from every other Country in the world too.

I hate the politics in America no doubt, but politicians don't sum up every living specimen in the Country by any stretch of the imagination; and by Christ, I'm no fan of English politicians either.

I think it's a "hip" cultural thing to jump on the band wagon of hating something fashionable to hate for no valid reason.

Most Americans would say the people do but that's actually false! If each person's vote went into picking the president that would make America a democracy (it's really a Republic but people have a hard time believing this) What really happens is that the votes go to the Electoral College who use the votes to base their own choice on. It's a little more complicated then that but that's really all I know.

Just felt like explaining, no rude intent.

That is true. Also, doesn't the Supreme Court have the final say if there's some discontent with the results? Sounds almost... oligarchical.

I've never met anybody here in England who really hates America. We poke fun at them sometimes, but it's just a stereotype that's not taken seriously, like that English people are cultured and snobbish or that French people are rude and romantic. At least, that's in my experience. A lot of it probably stems from the fact that people in America seem a lot more patriotic (as you would be, living in the most powerful country in the world). Few Britons would wave their flag around proudly.

Actually, we do have some say in the vote for president, but not total control...it has to do with the whole checks and balances thing (it's all about limiting and balancing power, so no person or group, including the president has complete control). This is why the electoral college was created, to act as a "check" for the people's (popular) vote. This system has it's advantages and disadvantages.

It usually works the way it is supposed to, in that the popular vote winner, should in theory, be the winner of the presidency, unless some unusual circumstances cause the electoral college to change their votes. Sometimes it doesn't work out that way though (think about the Bush, Gore 2000 elections, where Gore won the popular vote, but Bush won the presidency because he had more electoral votes). This shows that there are some flaws in the system that need to be addressed.

Sss, yes, americans are thought of as horrible people in many countries. It's something really stupid, to be honest. I don't like when someone says "I hate all americans", it's a dumb and ignorant stereotype. Just like everyone thinks that mexicans are all lazy, stupid and dishonest.

Ya, I heard this comedian make a joke about racism before.

Quote:
I don't get the conflicting stereotypes of Mexicans, first they're lazy and next they're stealing your jobs? Let me tell you, I someone lazy is taking your job then you must suck at doing it!

I'm paraphrasing of course.

Yeah, I don't really mind if they make jokes out of it. I just don't like it when they say it in a serious manner.

And when voting has been proven time and again to be incredibly crooked and controlled, it honestly isn't the fault of the people, but the administration. We're not given a chance to elect people who truly represent ourselves. Look up how the polls are almost always "broken" or there's not enough of them in low-income areas.

Personally I think the media over here bombards us with hate for the amercians. It blames them all for the iraqi war and says that our ex-prime minister was bush's lapdog (which I suppose in a way he was) and that he was the problem. So we voted a new prime minister and nothing happened, apart from the credit crunch and his desperation to stay in office.
Hate is well spread, but it is the peoples choice wither to beleive it or not. A recent thing that sparked a HUGE hatred of white amercians was when a video from a sarah palin rally was launched on youtube. It showed hundres of people being racist about obama and black's in general. Our population is now very anti-racist and if they started spouting that abuse here they would probably end up in a gutter (no kidding).
Not that I hate the amercians. I just dislike ignorant people. They are everywhere, so you don't blame one country for its litter of the population. :D
