So what you're saying is that people self-harm for reasons other than attention?

Umm... Yes. I don't do it myself but I have a friend who does and I've known other people who have done, too. If you seriously believe the only reason anyone would self harm is for attention then well... That just shows how much the emo subculture is f**king things up, because it really is giving people the impression that self-harm is just a way of getting attention.

If you don't cut yourself for attention then why the hell would you tell anyone about it? Furthermore, what is this "so it's barely visible" crap? If it's just something you do for your own reasons then there's no reason for it to be visible at all. Sorry if I came off as ignorant, but some of these posts made my bullshit-ometer go through the roof. I'm not trying to bash on self-harmers, I'm bashing on people who act like they're not being attention whores when they clearly are. For all you know, I could've put myself in the hospital once or twice. I'm not going to tell you, though, because absolutely nobody wants to hear my f*****g horror stories any more than I want to hear theirs. If you're a self-harmer, I don't care. I don't give a f**k about the when, the how, the why, or anything. You wanna tell someone, go get a counselor. You wanna tell your friends on WP, use PM or email. You wanna keep it to yourself, then you'd better do a damned good job. But don't play it off like you don't want anyone to know when you really do, and then turn around and deny it when accused. I don't have time for that chickenshit. Nobody does. And that's the final word.

Geez... You really are ignorant if you think that attention seeking is the only reason someone would self harm. I also guess that your less than humble opinion puts you above that of psychologists... If you ask most self harmers (the ones who do it for real, there are ones who *do* do it for attention, I'll grant you that) they'll say it's because either 1) it's the only way they can make emotional pain feel real or 2) they've become addicted to it. But it usually starts with 1 and moves on to 2. Seriously, people who harm themselves because they've got a psychiatric disorder don't do it because they want attention.

I used to burn myself when I was in late teens - early 20's. I never told anyone (other than my wife) until last year. I am now 47, so that was not for any attention.

I wouldn't recommend it.

I did not say attention's the only reason. I said that if it's not the reason then you shouldn't feel the need to tell anyone about it, or else it probably (unconsciously) is the reason or at least a part of it. Please learn how to read before you call people ignorant.

One might tell others because one
is worried about what they are doing.

Starbuline - I was not addressing you, I was addressing Beno.

calandale - Thanks for being the only person to raise a decent counter-argument instead of yelling and pointing fingers like a child.

This is a sensitive area, you have to be careful with what you say - it can get misinterpreted easily. But if this is a serious question, then I direct you to Wiki's answer:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self_harm#Psychology

The UK ONS study reported only two motives: “to draw attention” and “because of anger”.[1] Many people who self-injure state that it allows them to "go away" or dissociate, separating the mind from feelings that are causing anguish. This may be achieved by tricking the mind into believing the pain felt at the time is caused by self-injury instead of the issues they were facing before: the physical pain therefore acts as a distraction from emotional pain.[4] The sexual organs may be deliberately hurt as a way to deal with unwanted feelings of sexuality, or as a means of punishing sexual organs that may be perceived as having responded in contravention to the persons well being.(e.g., responses to child sexual abuse).
