I began driving for the 1st time in February. Since then I have had a ridiculous fear of mailboxes. I haven't hit one it's just it's hard for me to tell how far I am from one when driving. Driving stresses me out enough by itself, I don't like being afraid of mailboxes...

What kind of car are you driving? I used to have an old 77 T-Bird that often made me feel that way, because it was huge and the hood was so wide I couldn't always tell how close I was getting to external objects (they call a vehicle like that a 'road barge'). Smaller cars are easier to navigate because the field of vision is less cluttered and the edges of the vehicle don't seem so far away.

Yeah, I think I clocked an open mailbox's door with my passenger-side mirror about 20 years ago. Couldn't be helped (as far as you know)... ;)

My mom wrecked two cars on the passenger side getting either into or out of a garage. The first time was when I was about 4 years old, and she broke the little workbench my dad built for me, including a little vise--just like Dad's big one--with her '62 Oldsmobile (road barge indeed, as Willard noted). I cried for hours.

Maybe poor proprioception extends from the individual to the vehicle--I still walk into door jambs sometimes too--ouch. :(
