Can special interests be suppressed?

I have heard that this is possible and since I am pretty sure I really am at the end of a special interest that has lasted three years and I would love to be able to supress my special interests more- especially since it's hit me so hard I don't know what to do without one (for the passed six/seven years they have been falling on top of each other and I don't know what to be when I'm just me.
I dont know who has succeeded but I would really like to give this a try so I don't have to deal with the other issue of my friends becoming aware of how weird I am, I know I tell people too much about my interests and I shouldn't- how do other people manage to supress such huge amounts of endorphins flowing through them. I also love to write but I've only ever finnished a fanfiction before- if I lose my interest I stop straight away, (which is a whole other problem since my story is in a competition) I want to be able to finish a story and other things I want to do without my interest getting in the way. I would really love advice please help!

I'm sure it's possible to completely suppress your special interest but to do so would be very unhealthy.

As for the issue with your friends; try as hard as you can to remember that they don't want to talk about your special interest in the same way you do. Do you and your friends have any common interests you can talk about instead?

One last thing; it's great that you have friends but don't try to change who you are to suit them. Even if they do find you weird, they will stick by you if they are real friends.

My problem is I have always- my entire life on only really shared my interests with my friends. At primary school I didn't ever have to try to fit in I was just me and had never had to think about it before and also my special interest is my common subject with my newer friends- they've never seen how mad it is that overnight something I love is something I don't care about that much any more. Im really freaking out at the moment because its like I'm ready to move on and I can't because there is nothing to move onto I think back in Easter I did manage to stop it changing totally- keeping with the interest I have at the moment- its not helping that I'm about a quarter still into my interest an the rest is kust me not knowing what to do because my interests have always basically ruled my life! Any help?

I'm probably not be the best person to ask for advice about this but I would suggest limiting the amount of time in which you indulge in your special interest. This way, you can still enjoy your special interest without letting it completely dominate your life. I hope that helped!

They key is learning to control your special interest. It's great to have a special interest, but when it controls your life, it's bad.

Well that is exactly my problem I don't know how to stop it from coming into every conversation I've ever had and to stop it from influencing everything I do, that's the hardest part, I have know idea how and I really want to learn.

My whole life my interests have always centred on one person be it from a book, film, tv or as awful as it is- someone I actually know. They have never done me any good and I'm really stick in a trap at the moment. I don't know what to do about it, it's as though my interest was meant to change and then it didn't. I wasn't ready and I think I stopped the change and now I'm stuck on my interest of just over three years in two twilight characters. It's like my interest is only just there in the background- I barely care about it other than wanting it to come back and then I have a sudden day of indulgence again out of the blue I really don't get what's happening.

Well if you are that obsessed with characters you would be a great novelist!! !

I'm glad to hear you can learn to suppress your interests, at least around other people. I've had trouble dealing with this too, however.

Hehe well I do love to write but all my characters belong to someone else I've always dreamed that I could create my own special interest around one of my own characters.
