My parents(but especially my mother) have been pestering me get a job since I was a teenager. I have been able to get jobs here and there(and have one now), but I am miserable. I hate working for someone else, showing up when they want me here, and interacting with people I cannot stand. What I really want to do is work for myself. But every time I bring the subject up, my parents tell me I'm nearly certain to fail and instead to get a job somewhere stable. Thing is I don't want stability. I want to do what I am passionate about and earn a living wage doing so. I understand that the retirement programs my parents and grandparents relied on will be insolvent by the time I need it so I am trying to create something on my own but my parents refuse to support my decision. Anyone else have this problem? And what should I do to persuade them that I cannot live my life as a nameless employee?

No - I couldn't wait to get out of my parents' house and on my own, so I moved out a week after graduating high school.

Pray for a miracle.

Many people have jobs they don't like but they do them anyway because they have bills to pay. Just saying. You are not alone in that regard.

However, it is possible to be self employed, if you learn a trade/service then you can have your own small business. Off the top of my head, jobs like: carpenter, accountant, web page designer, catering business. You do not say what your passion is. Do you know? If you do, google it and see what kind of hits you get and go from there.

Many people keep their 'day job' while they work on their passion career on the side and keep the day job until they can get the true interest job off the ground. Sounds like you need to do some research about the area you are interested in. What steps do you have to take to get there? Do you need more school? Do you need funding? Are you living in the right part of the country to do what you want to do?

If you could present your parents with a concrete plan they might be more supportive.

Good luck!

Well, paintingdiva gave some pretty good advice, and i also would reccomend that if you need to get away from people maybe getting a job at home, i know people who will do typing at home for their job, or will sell insurance over the phone etc, then you wouldnt have to show up on time or anything, and you would be able to follow your passion while keeping food on the table and keeping the bills paid

While it is possible to be self-employed, it can take a long time to actually get there (it takes a few years on average, unless you're lucky), especially seeing how you have to know how to actually run a business in order to do it properly. My advice is to stick to working for someone else until you get to the point where you are financially able to start a business (it takes money to start one, actually profiting from it can't begin until you've established said business and started a good advertising campaign ("gotten it out there" so to speak) and all that jazz). I suggest you stick with what you've got for now, and start working on self-employment when you are able to do so.

You'll just have to suck it up and work for someone else until you can become self-employed.
