I can understand not knowing Grorr (one of my current obsessions, but they are obscure) or '80s movies like Shor Circuit.

However, my more popular references go over their head, too. Monty Python, Rush, Opeth, "djent", Airplane and Colbert Report references have been used, but none land.

Yet, it seems that they laugh at random looks, pictures, etc. I don't understand it at all.

I have considered potentially using My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, but bronies are usually super obsessive and/or trolls, and I would want friends with more interests than one show.

As far as music goes...I have been a metal fan since age 9 and hated rap and electronic music since. My opinion on some electronic music has been changing for specific genres, but has remained the same overall.

Most of my time was spent quoting monty python, blackadder and red dwarf, a lot of it went over my friends heads and very few landed, but occasionally the odd one would be picked up by someone.

Dont watch a show you dont want to watch just to make friends, if you have to be someone other than you then its not really ideal. Other people will have your interests, might just take a while to find those people, if you carry on being yourself and making quotes you have a chance of meeting someone who 'gets' the jokes, if you pick up other things to fit in, and stop making the jokes you like you have a much much smaller chance of ever finding anyone who shares your interests.

I already watch Friendship is Magic, so it is moreso concern about the influence the commmunity would have on me. Some bronies are sick, sick people. Their metal is AWESOME though, which took me by surprise.

I am a normal teen (although I am quite a dork) and I also cannot understand the rap music and electronic stuff personally I like rock and roll and metal, and other generes as well. I think most normal kids just listen to what their friends listen to. I never have because my dad is a huge Rush fan so for forty-eighty minutes (the drive to his house) we listen to Rush, one of my favorite bands.

You seem to be a bit too ready to apply guilt by association in regards to MLP. Every community for everything ever has its outlying strangeness, trolls and fetishists. Really, you can Google R34 anything you will get results. If you go to more moderated sites like Equestria Daily, then you won't see any of that sort of thing.

As for why normal teenagers don't know about such things, I would imagine it's because they base their interests upon what other people like, as the purpose of having such interests is, to them, to be able to interact with other people whilst doing those interests and to discuss them. Personally, I am usually interested in things on a purely personal level and I generally prefer more solitary activities. Reading, writing, playing video games, that sort of thing. Video games have become more of a social hobby in recent years, but I've been playing since the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and have gone further back than that with GOG and emulators.

About the things you mentioned interest in, I found Monty Python hilarious, have heard about the Colbert Report and its excellent parody, generally prefer instrumental music like rock, metal, even classical, and don't really recognise most of the movies you mentioned.

My opinion on bronies has since changed a lot, though I think they push the show on people a bit much at times. Actually read my first fanfiction based on Pinkie Pie that was well written and quite humorous. Then there's the awesomeness that is pony metal, the occasional cool crossover art, etc. My issue moreso lies in the intense obsessiveness with it all. I am very autistic, and they make me look mild. It was always more about the obsessiveness than the "cloppers."

I also now visit Equestria Daily, well, daily. Some of the banners are even saved in my pictures.

Interests should be personal first and social second, I think. If you don't really like something, why would you pretend to just to befriend someone? They would just be a poor friend in the end since they would likely come to expect that of you.

I have come to realize some of my interests are obscure, others are more popular. As long as I am supporting quality, I don't care either way.

The quality of something is subjective.

Because most people like what they media throw at them. Most of the things on popular T.V. programs are from the past few years, not the 80's.
