Do you think your Asperger's effects your taste in music? I've noticed many aspie teenagers (including myself) have different music tastes than most of their Neurotypical peers. For example, while most NT teens might prefer Jonas Brothers, Lady Gaga, and other contemporary popular music, I have a liking for "old school" rock and roll and some pop. Some of my favorites include:

Sarah McLachlan
Tori Amos
Sheryl Crow
Joan Jett
Billy Joel
Pink Floyd
Alanis Morissette
The Runaways
Janis Joplin

So I thought I should ask you this....Do you think your Asperger's has an effect on your taste in music?

I doubt it. I like a lot of old school bands too, but I blame my Mom and father for my taste in music. I grew up with AC/DC and Fleetwood Mac. Kiss would be my favorite band whether I was an Aspie or not.

Plus, I don't mind a little mainstream every know and then. Just because I'm still swooning over the Backstreet Boys doesn't mean that I've outcasted every band that had formed in the past ten years.

......Wait, it's been 11 years since the 90s?! No wonder all my favorite cartoons are now on Boomerang. God I feel old all of a sudden.

Not directly. I know plenty of NTs who dislike more popular music, and I know a few people with AS who only listen to mainstream music.
This is like that imbecilic "ASPIES ARE HIPSTERS!!!1!!1!!!11!111!! !!" idea...

I don't really think my taste in music is based in my Aspie-ness. I grew up on a lot of Southern Rock and Country, though the base for my tastes have changed, thanks to my friends introducing me to a lot of different music. I still like my Devil Went Down To Georgia, but now most of my music is toward the Hard Rock stuff now; I'm a die-hard fan of bands like Disturbed and Evanescence.

I don't think so.

I like some contemporary popular artists (like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry), but I don't judge a song based on who sings it, I judge a song based on whether or not it has a catchy rhythm and a good beat. I don't really have a favorite genre, just favorite songs. My music tastes are very eclectic.

Yes.
I like IDM and electronic fiddling while my friends think it's just noises and squeaks. :)
And they are pretty much correct.

First of all, I don't understand why everyone who has posted has said "no" so far, but "yes" is a more popular answer in the poll.

Anyway, I do like much different music than my peers, but I am not sure if it's related to my aspieness. I think it might be because I tend to make friends with adults rather than teenagers, and the music I listen to is appreciated by most adults, but teenagers don't tend to like it. However, my dad LOVES music, but doesn't listen to much teen pop, so I kind of like some of the stuff he listens to.

I just don't listen to ANY "NT music" (rap, hip hop, teen pop etc.) at all. My favourite band is a band called "Great Big Sea".

This an example of their music:

They also have some slower stuff:

I like their fast stuff better in general, but I actually kind of like the slow song that I posted.

No. I like some popular music like Katy Perry but I also like music that's kinda out there. Like I like one song by Insane Clown Posse, mIrAcLeS. I like 80's/90's music too. I think because when I was little I played Grand Theft Auto Vice City and would always listen to the radio on it. (Automatic. <3) Like Descartes said I judge by the songs themselves. I actually don't know what the artists are to some songs I listen to. Though sometimes if I like one song by an artist I might listen to another song by them because I might like that one.

I love Sarah McLachlan's music too! I really love classical as it is "moving" and I want to dance when I hear it. A lot of the music I like is Vocaloid. I often like rock. I like alot of music my parents do too.I guess my genres are quite diverse as most music I can enjoy. I like older popular pop better than newer stuff but sometimes I enjoy the sound of new stuff and rarely I enjoy the lyrics too.

i think it does, if not, i blame/thank my co-morbids.

my aspergers makes me experience the world differently, so what i look for in music is also different from the general population.
call me a hipster all you like, but modern popular music ranges from 'meh' to 'bleargh' in my opinion (although not becouse it's popular...)

I don't think it affects my musical preferences. It's true that I like to music that usually peer neither considers, but that can be common among people; for example, my best friend is an NT, but she listens to music that no one else I've met likes, and her musical preferences are considered from our classmates even more "weird" than mine.

I like the good ol 1950s music and some medieval lute and can't forget the ponies songs, but all the aspies I know in real life just like dubstep, which I hate cause it freakin rapes my ears.

Me being introverted and withdrawn for most of my life, and having been a victim of bullying- as well as being misunderstood by others has unsurprisingly made want to "lash out" and be heard, so I turned to Rock music; the more loud and extroverted music genre in existence.- I believe the same sort of thing could be said for other Aspies or Auties.
