I don't get it. I was diagnosed with HFA when I was young, then when I was 13 I was diagonosed with AS but I'm really sucessful so far acidemically (and dig this) and socially. I have a few other friends with AS too but sometimes I seem completely different from them. Even one of my AS friends said "Do you really have Asperger's because you don't seem like it". I honestly think me and him have misunderstandings just for normal reasons, but I do seem different from a normal aspie....

Oh yeah and another thing. I don't like what other people are saying about other people on here about people who are not in the autistic spectrum. This is like the site to say that aspies are the greatest people on the universe and it pisses me off. You just don't talk about people behind their backs autistic or not (there's a social tip for you aspies :x )

There is an unfortunate amount of animosity torwards NTs on the part of some members.

attacking NTs is not tolerated, regardless of how people feel

so if you see something like that, please report it to a moderator.

I want my sister to be on WP more often, because she is NT, and a very nice one at that.

Mariah918, remember that AS and autism are a Spectrum, so it could be that you're lower down on the Spectrum than your friends. I also don't like the NT slandering on here sometimes. Sure, they can be total idiots to us sometimes, that's only a select group of them, and I know many NTs who are nice and kind to me.

Maybe Alex should note the 'no offence to NT's' thing in the ToS?

Yes, a lot of people with autistic disorders on the high-end of the spectrum can learn to adapt socially speaking, especially where they haven't been demotivated from forming social bonds in the first place. What I've noticed is that people with HFA and AS tend to be able to fit in well with less mainstream (alternative) people, where social skills are less of an issue anyway.

On the other topic, yeah, a lot of people with AS tend to see themselves as being superior to NTs. Let me get this through to anyone who thinks like that who might read this; no you're not. In fact, I think labelling them as "neurotypicals" is derogatory in itself.

I think usage of the term didn't begin that way, but it has developed some negative connotations. I think initially it was the politically correct alternative to "normal," which implies abnormal.

It's definitely possible to learn a lot of social skills. Honestly, the only reason I can function socially is because I've observed peoples' behavior so much that I've been able to decode a lot of it.
