Typical dialog with a [jerk] during class.

ME: *stimming*
NT: what 'ya doing?
ME: *pauses--pretends to be in trance*
NT: *baffled*
ME: oh man, i went to the future
NT: omg what was it like?
ME: so during the drama production and everyone got...violent diharrea...from the food
NT: oh wow *tells friends*
ME: *loses interest and begins to contemplate social mistake because of lack of AS awareness in school and subsequent use of "acting" to somehow pretend to be normal*

Has anyone had a similar situation, to cover up the stimming? Please discuss.

No, I have never been in a situation like this.

Although, I do find it hysterical that someone would believe that you went to the future.

I played along, and so did he. He is pretty dumb anyway.

Wish I had thought of that :P At least it's socially cooler then stimming.

Yeah it was kinda cool, so I added it to my collection of exquisite random social turn-arounds.

That was a very witty remark! :thumright:

If I stim, I say that it was recommended against my headaches or I say that it keeps me awake after an all-nighter.

Staying awake works a great excuse too.

I dont simm at all at school. Im semi-popular and I plan to keep it that way. But there is a price to pay. As soon as school is over I just want to punch a wall to release all of that built in frustration.

"Stimming" is psychological jargon for "self-stimulation".

Basically it means to preform a repetitive action with an object or body part while you deep in thought/stressed/trying to relax/etc. (different people do it on different occasions) Examples of relatively normal stimming include: cracking knuckles, biting nails, messing with cuticles and drumming fingers.

Everyone does it from time to time, but people with autism tend to be a bit more abnormal with stims and do things which seem very weird compared to others.

Personally, the stims of mine tend to include: pacing, messing with fingers/wrists, chewing on gums, chewing on knuckles and wringing hands.

I rock and I used to chew pencils but I still bite my nails if I'm nervous or bored.

My coverup is totally that my arthritis is bugging me and rocking makes my back feel better (I got JRA when I was 9)

Some people I'm just like "I have Asperger's. It makes me feel better" and leave it at that.

I've never been in that kind of situation, however, that was a great response!

That was cute. ^-^

I tend to do ones that are considered normal, but at the same time, my mouth is open. Which is terrible, because people question me or make comments like "Are you catching flies or something?"

Most of the people commenting are adults, though. >.>
