I feel the isolation today. Mardi gras is the time when my city comes alive with sights, sounds and communal celebration that makes it special. I can't feel like i'm a part of it. I get overloaded by all the stuff going on around me. As a result I have to stay far away and just can't seem to connect with the people I see enjoying themselves. Worse my family and friends think i'm a weirdo as a result and that just makes the sense of being cut off even worse. It's giving me the blues.

I feel something similar- My "narrow focus of interest" has always been skateboarding.. I was brought to a Mardi Gras in 1995, and despite the "fun" and mass amounts of exposed boobies around me, I was only there to find new places to skate.. while I walked through it all on Bourbon st. holding my skateboard.

Whatever, it's originally a Christian holiday, and all that craziness isn't very Christian. Don't feel bad.

I never liked going to parades & I haven't been to one since I was about 10. I'm lucky that I'm a little over a hour away from NewOlreans & I live between Thibodaux & Houma instead of living around town in those areas. I can completely avoid all the chaos as long as I don't need to go anywhere. Do you live around here or NO?

I've never been to NOLA for Mardi Gras, but I was in the Quarters for Halloween once.
Nasty stuff.

I don't mind a crowd at a concert (apart from getting in and out), but the random bumping into people with no apparent direction on Bourbon Street was awful. No fun.
My only defence is to get silly drunk, then I don't mind so much.

Hehe. Houma. I work for a company that delivers equipment for the oil industry, and have flown out from Houma many times.
Down that way and towards Fourchon they have these incredible combos of Gas station, pub and casino, so you can get plastered, lose your money, and then fill her up and drive home. :)
I love Louisiana. But not parades on Bourbon Street.

I live in the greater New Orleans area. Love the place and the food. I like walking around the quarter and along the banks of the river at night and listening to the city. My favorite spot is directly across from the st louis cathedral at night where I can sit and just drink in the place undistrubed for a while.

I never go to bourbon street during marid gras due to the noise and my general dislike of drunks. I try to go to the family friendly parades like Rex and zulu with my family. That's where my isolation seems to feel the strongest. I'm in a crowd of revelers who are having a great time and I just can't feel it. I really hate public events for that reason (weddings especialy) but I want to be with the family. I get the blues because of the weird feeling of being alone in a crowd so and just leave after a while then feel bad for walking out on family and friends. I gather thats not too odd for aspies but still feeling alone during the biggest party on earth and not being able to do anything about no matter what I try is frustrating.
