I can see what I'm doing but can't stop it. I'm procrastinating, in a very busy way. That's something I learned years ago. Don't sit there and do nothing! So I do something - something else. Something that does not need attention but is generally useful. So I still get to be afraid and don't face the problem.

Today's problem should be simple: a cleaner will come tomorrow morning for 3 hours. Simple? Of course not. I have to clean up for the cleaner. I have to organize things - sort my wash, for example. And what did I do last night? Put up my books for sale on Craigslist. Useful, yes, but off the mark totally. Also, that made a pile of books that I have to put somewhere. So the mess is worse.

Even as I write this, what else am I doing? Eating. I have managed baby steps towards tidying up but ... I can't even finish this sentence.

At least you’re creating revenue for yourself, which is a very smart thing.

I do hope these weren’t books you love, though.

I know what you mean, though. I’m a great procrastinator, too.

But I am sure you will get the tidying up done later in the day, after, perhaps, a nap.

Claradoon, don't be so hard on yourself! I always have to "tidy up" before my housekeeper comes over. And sometimes I don't get it done, and that's OK, too. If you were perfect, you wouldn't need a cleaner because you would have your household running like a fine-tuned Swiss watch. You are getting help because (I'm guessing) you have problems with executive function. But don't stress yourself by blaming!

Yesterday I met with an elder law attorney. I tried to get all my papers together, my numbers on the financial sheet all correct and so on, but I've been overwhelmed with fatigue. I told myself SHE works for ME and I'm only able to do what I'm able to do. So the meeting was not everything it could have been, but it was okay. I'll settle for 80%.

If you hire a helper on a regular basis - mine comes once a week, maybe yours is less often - it has a tendency to get you into a routine, which I find VERY helpful. Autistic people need routines!

You nailed it. I want my place to run like a fine-tuned Swiss watch. Which it ain't gonna do. But it could. And then I could make it gorgeous. I'm good at that. Even my relatives are startled at how gorgeous my home can be. It's legend. And I don't have to spend much. But this is my 2nd year here and I still can't find things - haven't finished unpacking! And seeing something beautiful (a poster, even) really affects my mood. So I really should fix this place up. As it is, it's a downer.

Thank you, KK. I'm not sure about the revenue from books on Craigslist, but it's a sensible thing to try. Ah, do you remember the days when we could pile those books in a bag and go loaf around in a used-book store? Where the cashier was a veritable encyclopedia? And the other shoppers were quiet loners just like me? It was a place where I fit in. And now the only survivors are highly commercial with add-ons and security cameras and noise and hysterical signage (! !!MYSTERIES!! !) and even lotteries. If I stay too long, or move too slowly, security people start following me around. One of my old haunts now has a big sign: "Welcome! Now give us all your money and get out." What a world.

Where was I? Oh, books to sell. No, not beloved books, not any more. And in one case, a duplicate!

Exactly! But I have to shovel a path from the front door to the bathroom, where I have to sort my mountains of laundry into big orange garbage bags, and organize the soap and coins. That's the beginning. I mean, I have to get it so the cleaner can find the stuff to clean.

That one I got help with. A nurse comes here. All I have to do is fast (yuck!). I don't even hardly have to get out of bed or even wake up. But even fasting properly takes executive function - I have to write down when I ate and calculate exactly how many hours and remember that the fast doesn't end by the clock, it end by the nurse. Details, details.

I'd love to know what rare books you have, but I don't want to cause you any extra work.

Also, I have realized I will never be a writer, so I'm getting rid of all my writing books, which is a bit of a punch in the gut, but I gotta get rid of stuff.

Gee, Isabella, I don't know if they're rare. But I'll let you in on this one, that just occurred to me. "The Way Of All Women" by Esther Harding, forward by Carl Jung.

I have Strunk & White lol.

That book by Louise Hay about emotional causes of physical ailments - that's good but I've pretty much memorized most of it - it was a revelation when it first came out.

And then my writing books:
Creating Characters,
Characters & Viewpoint,
Plot,
Armed and Dangerous: writer's guide to weapons,
Deadly Doses: writer's guide to poisons.

That's all I've been able to list. Heaven knows I've got shelves of books. But I gotta sort and pick and sigh and so on.

Exactly! At first I was annoyed but now it's 6am and I'm so pleased.
What a relief. Especially after I made 4 big bags of laundry and then
found out I don't have any coins for the laundry machines.

She wanted to know if I wanted somebody on the weekend.
I wrote back, just now, and said why don't we just skip this one.
And made a jolly little note in my budget.
