Why don't people just commit mass suicide if life is so bad?

If most people's lives are so awful while the world itself is doomed because of the nukes and covid and the environment, then why isn't mass suicide more common? Most humans are just completely miserable, slaving away and hating every second of their existence with nothing to look forwards to. Maybe humans should all just gather together and end it in a quick and painless way by drinking the Kool-Aid or whatever instead of sitting around and waiting to die of covid or radiation poisoning. At least they won't feel so alone knowing there are at least millions of other people who can't stand to go on anymore.

But death itself is frightening me.

1. Maybe there are already mass suicides.

2. Maybe they're afraid of finding out what's on the other side.

According to Hamlet, because they fear the afterlife is worse. I have wondered, at times, how governments and businesses would react to the kind of scenario you describe.

The survival instinct, as a result of the evolutionary process.

Not sure if people are aware but suicidal ideation is common (especially in young and very old people). But ideation rarely gets to the stage of attempting suicide and even those who attempt suicide rarely succeed. Why? because when it comes to actually attempting killing yourself the biological imperative for self-preservation kicks in and the absolute fear of the unknown (ever present) comes into sharp focus.

Most people would not jump down a black hole if they don't know what's down there. The fear of what happens next takes over and the fear of pain is overwhelming.

Well, it can't be worse than this life, so it doesn't work on me. 8)

I think the cultures that survive to this day are all cultures with believing that "the future/afterlife will be better"or binding people to each other with emotions to prevent too many individuals from committing suicide.
Equality has never been achieved, so the lower classes need to be given beliefs to live for being exploited. Civilizations that don't do that won't be seen by us today.

In the Catholic church, it was a mortal sin to commit suicide to prevent people from doing it.

Some do -- although killing their families before killing themselves does not really qualify as mass suicide.

there could be a lot of different reasons.

not enough information to determine the answer to the question of "why?".
