I made a little 'cave' under some wild rose bushes and box elder trees, and then furnished it with a discarded lawn chair (that I repaired), a couple of old milk crates, and some citronella candles. From March until September, and for five consecutive years, it was my secret refuge from all of the conflict going on in my parents' house. I could 'disappear' and still be within calling distance of the house. With a little careful trimming of the leaves and branches, I could observe everything going on in the immediate area without being seen. I wish I could go back.

I love this! ^

My mom took me to Bald Head Island in North Carolina and I climbed the entire lighthouse by myself.

There were also times when I was at my grandma and grandpa’s house and my grandpa and I used to watch baseball on TV and he would ask me in his thick southern accent “Sam, do you want to watch them boys play baseball?” And I always said yes.

My grandma and I spent lots of time together too. We used to watch Reba and bake cupcakes.

My 9 year old birthday. We had a horse paddock in front of our house and we played hide and go seek with torches at night

When I was about ten years old there was a nearby stable that offered horseback riding sessions throughout a beautiful wooded glen. I was allowed to go several times each summer including for my birthday parties. I learned all the basics of horse care and I knew all the horses by name. I still get flashbacks of the sensory elements and the joy I felt riding at that age. Many of my friends were afraid of riding, or their parents wouldn't even let them try. It was very exciting for me to go and I felt very lucky.

When I was thirteen my grandfather got me two horses at a different location, but I will always remember the excitement of going to that first stable and feeling like "I belonged".
