I have that issue all of my life. People around me assume because I am disabled and they are not that they are smarter than me, and for many years I allowed their opinions to be right. Well, they were wrong about me and my life all along, especially the nurse and the employees in my group home agency. Especially when it came to my Asperger's and how it affects me. They told me it affected things that it actually never did, so that they can get control over me. They even lied to the state saying I had classic autism with mental retardation, so that they can continue to get money to keep me in their controlled group home environment.My family pulled the same crap, so that they can control me because they do not want to "let go" and accept the fact that I never needed them.They are very controlling people anyway and need someone to control, but unfortunate for me because I have a disability, so they think it is too easy.
The things that it actually does affect, which is an inconvenience to them, they told me that it did not affect and/or Asperger's can be cured.The inconvenience being lack of empathy,sympathy and/or understanding for other people's needs and issues. Also the lack of me being able to be there for other people's emotional needs, when i lack the skills to provide them.
So I actually finally proved them wrong by not only writing how my Asperger's affected me, but I see a new therapist and they are now researching Asperger's in my autism agency, so now they know I am right and they are wrong.
