Wait, but monasticism isn't completely out the window.. There still are abbeys and monasteries, there are still orders that take vows of silence... That seems to me like a much better option then a psych hospital...

I was only ever in private psych places, and believe me, those were bad enough.
24 hour attention/watching, lot of noise, including crying and screaming, some staff are power freaks and will take every opportunity to use power ( I was shoved to the ground and sat on when I was very thin and had only been trying to get away).
I was even stitched up without any form of numbing.
And I have heard it is much, much worse on wards in the general hospitals. A lot of abuse goes on. You lose your rights. It is a living hell, I can tell you, and I was only kept in for 6 weeks. 6 weeks too long. It is not like the order and routine you get in a normal hospital ward.

I spent three days in a psych ward, and was too pissed off about being there to take the ativan that would have made it a tolerable experiance. Instead I lay in bed all day dreaming about doing drugs and beating to death the true crazys in that place. Those people are annoying.

Living out your life in a psych hospital? Not a good idea. For one thing, you have to pay for it. It's considered a medical expense, and most insurance companies will barely cover you. My parents had to pay $4,000 when I stayed in one for two weeks. Also, being forced to live in the same building and never leave is a very depressing situation. It's a good place to go when you are in desperate need of psychiatric or emotional support, but the rest of the time you can probably get by with therapy.

Also I believe they let you back on the streets anyways when you seem sane enough. So even if you think you can tolerate being there forever you're still stuck with the bill in the end. Jail is somewhat similar, I learned that after being in jail for 2 weeks, had to pay a court fine and jail fee.
