I can't have my obsession anymore and don't know what to do.
You are in mourning.
The fact that the shrink belittles it doesn't make it less important.
Does anyone have a forum for that particular show?
Is it the type of thing that would inspire a convention or other event?
Have you searched WP or other forums for fans?

And if you found Aspie fans, would talking to them help?

I found a forum for it, but there's a schism right now between two groups of fighting fans. Even the Facebook page for it has some unbelievably nasty comments.
I have an Aspie friend who is really into the show. My mother and father are both spectrumers who like it as well so I think I might have to talk to them about it. Thanks for the ideas : )

Maybe that can be revealed after a period of mourning ....
I think so. Until then, I just feel so ridiculous about it, especially since my psychiatrist was such a complete butthead when he found out what I was so down about.

Well, i'll admit that is sad when good characters die, but my upbringing has always been, "9 times out of 10, what you see and hear on television (and any other form of entertainment) isnt real and must ONLY be viewed as entertainment." You can connect to a character, sure, but that entity is just that . . . fictional. This person cannot die because he/she doesnt exist. Granted, ive never really felt much of a connection with characters for this reason, but you have to remember that even though this character is like you, he/she may not be necessary for the storyline the writers are doing. Admittedly , i was a bit shocked when Kal Penn's character left "HOUSE," and there was an air of humor that left with him (the character committed suicide for no apparent reason). But that ended there . . . House is still a crazy @$$hole, and the show maintains itself. Who knows, you might like you show's replacement for the character more than the current one. ![]()
I wish. Actually the show in itself is a spin-off of sorts.
It seems a lot of shows are ending lately, I wonder how many people are feeling this way.
I can appease my addiction with the DvDs once its all over - IF the story holds up to the end, then it will bear many repeated viewings. If it sucks, I'll be torn between loving the show and never wanting to see the stupid ending again...I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I thought Criminal Minds would crash and burn when Mandy Patenkin's Character was suddenly written off with a pointless and unforshadowed suicide, but it's holding up just fine without him...great save by a good ensemble cast (and writers)...
Now that I think of it, I'm still in mourning about the Harry Potter series.
Bad enough it had to end, but did it have to end with such a stupid story?
I promised myself I wouldn't rant about it on WP, but I did tons of it on a certain HP forum.
If that's your interest, I can PM you about where to get sympathy.
But only if you promise not to tell anyone here my other name.

I'm sorry to hear your psychiatrist was a butthead about it. You know that we would understand though, right? (We, the people with no empathy, huh?
Actually, if you were to say what the show is and who the character is, it probably wouldn't mean anything to me, because I haven't watched a current American TV show in years. Except Dollhouse, which I liked, and they've canceled. But if you did say it, I would look it up, just because I find it interesting to see what other people's special interests are.
oh my goodness, Jadzea Dax. while my reaction wasn't nearly as intense as yours, i kept repeating to myself: the actress wanted to leave, this is the way it'll be. this is how it is. also, the same with Kate, from ncis. however, Sasha Alexander came back to do kate which helped for the mourning process. hopefully that actor may come back for a few episodes?
As a result of this thread I've suddenly realised that this has happened to me too; not about a character/TV show but about a "theory/train of thought", or "thinking in a certain way about a certain subject/idea", which had been occupying me increasingly for about two years, ( 18 years ago now ); it felt as if I had cut off an arm.
I really felt as if I had maimed myself, thrown away/killed a part of myself.
It was my decision, ( rather than someone else's ) to "stop thinking ( like that )" because I had become afraid that its intensity was bad for me/"unhealthy". I had spent at least 7-8 years before this sudden "special interest" ( intellectual activity ) performing the socially accceptable version of "me" so completely and so "perfectly" that I had had no time/space to "think", wasn't used to thinking like that, and it had frightened me.
One thing that I did to cope with the "loss", ( not recommended
), was to start smoking again, and drinking far far more.
And also, and this was a good idea, seeing as it turns out I am seriously gluten-intolerant, ( it makes me depressed ) I started eating meat again. I had been strictly vegan for animal rights reasons for the previous few months, ... eating huge amounts of bread... .
And, like Cockney Rebel did, I played a lot of music tapes over and over again, to fill my head/to drown in/stop me thinking.
I also wrote long letters to a couple of old/very close friends with bright bouncy coloured felt-tips, and lots of doodles, to try and cheer myself up.
But mostly my attempts to cope with the "loss" were harmful, so it's not surprising that a year later almost to the day, after an awful lot of extreme drinking, and smoking, I decided to allow myself to carry on with it/pick up on it again, though I almost immediately felt as if I was going mad again as a result, because of the intensity of it. It took me a few years, and the "relative peace" induced by a gf diet, to get used to it/accept it, ( and finding out about aspergers, to "explain" it!
)
But I can imagine as a result how you feel about losing your character. I am very sorry. I agree with the others that a conscious period of mourning, and memorial acts/behaviours and getting together/talking online or in RL with others in the same boat, is a very good idea.

I have seasons 1-3 which are the only ones out on DVD. I can't record the new ones because I don't have a TiVo or VCR. But I watch the reruns constantly, it does make me feel better.
However I am scared that if the character actually dies I will just become incredibly depressed when I watch the reruns, and then nothing will make me happy.
Most tv show episodes usually end up on Youtube...just type the name of the show in the search box. and you can choose whichever episode you want with the click of a mouse

ALBERTAN...and DAMN PROUD OF IT!!
The only other similar, ( and equally painful ), experiences that I have had, of being suddenly deprived of the object of my thoughts, have been in "relationships"/crushes/massive "in-love" situations, where I had no control, or very little, over the availability of the "object".
And it suddenly occurs to me that that is what was new, ( about the experience I described on previous page ); it was the first time that I had "fallen in love" with a subject/theme, ( I was going to say "idea" but realised that when I have "fallen in love" with people I have almost always been falling in love with an idea ), which was not incarnated in a person or something outside of me. It was the first time that I had fallen in love with something which I had, ( or thought I had ) "complete" control over; a thought without a body.
Am suddenly wondering whether my discovery of feminism, particularly of radical feminist analysis, ( Andrea Dworkin's "Intercourse" first of all ), right at the beginning of the "train of thought", was responsible for this development. As if I suddenly realised, at some level, that it was possible for me to think, deeply and passionately, about something other than a person, animal, or physical object.
It's interesting what constitutes "abstract" ( and women are not traditionally supposed to be "good" at/capable of the abstract ), because in a sense a character in a TV show is abstract, not concrete, but on the other hand you are dependent on a "concrete" medium for its presence in your life, as much as you are on a body for a person's presence.
Whereas a theory/train of thought/idea is dependent on no concrete medium, and noone can take you away from your attentive/concentrated/"adoring"/obsessed/focussed contemplation/examination/exploration of it, unless they drug, or ruthessly distract, you anyway!
