It seems to me that people think of being a "nice guy" as the be-all-end-all, both in reference to all they have to offer to a job,a significant other, etc; and (/or) the biggest hang-up for achieving these things.

I dunno, to me being a "nice guy" is something that never hurts (and in some cases can be very beneficial), but also something that by itself accomplishes very little in practical matters. People (as in a work environment) find my eccentricities funny and endearing, and I just laugh with them. That's nice and all, everything is thus harmonious, but do I really get any respect?

It depends on definition and scenario. As far as I'm concerned, I am in grad school and working right now, and in school my professors appreciate the way I am and everything I bring to the table and can see my potential, but at work it seems like (despite the fact that I am good at my job) my absent-mindedness and mannerisms in conversation prevent me from being taken seriously.

I think they made themselves perfectly clear.

no I happen to be in a ver loving relationship with a very nice guy he's studying to be a doctor he's a perfect gentalmen and he always wants to stick up for me, he wants to be the supporter of the family but he still treats me like an equal and when he talks to me he makes me feel like the most beautiful woman in the world.

The whole 'nice guys finish last' thing is so 90's girls don't want bad guys because in reality a bad guy isn't practicle or safe and as much as the thrill of danger is attractive a girl dosen't settle down and marry the bad guy she may date him for a while yeah but you can't build a life with a bad guy

at least that my opinion.

You're a rare gem indeed.
