If you just remember to keep your palms against their shoulders and upper back, you should be fine. It alleviates some awkardness if you pat them a few times.

There's always the spanish way. :lol:

Just slam your arms around the other person, and quickly push your lips hard against each cheek, then grab them by the shoulders and shake them a bit.

Especially my grandfather does that all the time.
