The teachers at my GED school said that they've had people with only 2nd grade educations. Their services were partially one-on-one, and they had material available for every educational level up until basic high school stuff. They determined our levels by giving us diagnostic tests. Your grammar is already better than a lot of my fellow students' grammar. You'll probably do fine. If it's classrooms you're afraid of, you can learn the material at home using resources such as the internet. It would take more discipline, but the material is very basic. You could even say it's middle school level, if we're talking about a somewhat advanced middle school. There are even online practice tests that you can take to see where you stand. There are five sections in the GED exam: math, reading comprehension, writing/grammar, social studies, and science. The social studies and science sections are basically reading comprehension with basic social studies and science terminology and concepts thrown in. The hardest parts of the math test (in my opinion) were the geometry questions, and there were very few of them.

I really like the GED idea. One, it gets you out of the house consistently. Two, it encourages you to interact with non-threatening people. Three, it will propel you forward into some sort of career -- technical school was a great suggestion. Four, it doesn't sound like you have anything better to do with your time. Five, it's actually quite interesting.

I used to tutor GED students. They were all homeless drug addicts and alcoholics who barely knew how to read. Most could do some arithmetic, but not much more. By the time they were ready to take the exam, many of them passed. With the way you write, I would bet that you could pass the reading and writing sections tonight. Don't sell yourself short, here.

On the personal issues -- hygiene, fashion, whatever -- commit yourself to the self-respect that I know you feel you deserve. (If you didn't feel like you deserve it, you wouldn't complain about the way people treat you.) Find someone to help you. You asked us for help here; you can ask someone for help there (wherever you are). Don't know what clothes to buy? Ask the sweetest girl in your GED class to go shopping with you. Just one afternoon -- she doesn't have to be your girlfriend forever. Know what clothes to buy but can't afford them? So what -- go to the Salvation Army. We all might as well shop there for how well we dress. :D Don't have money for that? PM me and I'll send you some. I'm sure I would be proud to know you (I'm a cat person!), and I'd really like to see you get on track...

Edit: Whoever voted "no" or "not sure" in the OP's poll should be deeply ashamed.

I guess I'll see about this GED thing sooner or later. It'll have to be at home because of my phobia of being around a large crowd of people for an extended period of time and the fact that no one in my house can drive or owns a car.

Since we live month to month off government checks, we don't have enough money pay people to go back and forth to different places during the month.

Also, about RainingRoses money offer, I could never take money from a stranger off the internet. Thanks anyway though. My grandma gets from help from the people of her church every now and then and don't like that all that much.

Also my grandma keeps telling me to find a job at home or on the internet if I'm having problems socializing and functioning well with people in the outside world that bad.

I just don't know how likely that is.

Unfortunately, those are almost always scams. I would say check with the local ARC or the State Department of Rehab if there's any program they can place you into. I'm not a fan of people using government services, but in our case I see no issue about it since you need to get back on your feet again.

Actually making money that way is very unlikely. But if you want a job that involves very little contact with co-workers or customers, a night shift job might be right for you.

How bad are your symptoms of Asperger's? Like your awearness of visual and auditory stimuli around you? Do you have a license?

I don't know what that means. I know that when I'm in a setting with a bunch of people crowded together (bus, school class, hospital, etc) I get nervous and start sweating a lot through my palms and feet and sometimes through my armpits. I'm also very worried that people are laughing or staring at me, so much as it makes it hard to concentrate or focus on what I'm doing at that time, such as school work or working on jobs.

Edit: And of course the problems with body language, conversation skills, socializing, etc.

Edit 2: Also my stims. Eating boogers, mimicking things that I see on TV frequently, spouting random phrases for no reason.

What is ARC? Why do I need rehab, I haven't been on any drugs

ARC = Association of oh boy here we go ret*d Citizens. They work with regional centers and county social departments to help people with certain mental/developmental problems. My brother who is a full blown autie receives assistance through them
And I know in California the State Department of Rehab is in charge of helping people with disabilities find employment. I'm not saying you're an addict even though it sounds that way. 8)

What do you mean it sounds that way? and what's the smilie? Are you trying to imply something? I haven't used drugs ever and I'm offended that someone would suggest that.

I have to deal with these passive aggressive insults everywhere I go, because I'm poor or that I'm not as smart as the average person. Or because my face is "deformed" like a crack baby, which I am not.

I wish I didn't have to go through this in life or online (which is the last place I'd expect it)

What I meant to say it is a state department that can help you get a job. I know you're taking things literally but I didn't mean to do so.

Well I guess I'll ask my grandma about this. To see if they have home or internet jobs

Like I said, home/internet jobs are a scam - unless you work for a company that allows you to telecommute. You need to go outside to get a job, and personally I feel you need to start overcoming your agoraphobia first.

5 years? By then if my grandma is dead, I'd probably be homeless or living in a shelter, since my other relatives don't understand me and don't want to have anything to do with me. I won't be able to do any of the stuff I enjoy and I still won't have any friends.

It's going to be way worse than it is now 5 years from now.

MR20, at some point in life you're going to have conquer your fear. Either start doing that and slowly improve the quality of your life, or behold your bleak future:
