Actually I sort of stumbled into it all, but in retrospect the key was applying the principals outlined in my post.

Here's the short version:

(insert long story)

All this started with just some dorky Aspie guy and a bunch of numbers, the rest happened by learning to exploit this skill to maximum advantage.

If I had just fallen into the get a raise/promotion...get another raise/promotion trap, I'd
still be stuck in a cubicle complaining about never getting the raise/promotion I deserved.

@Wefunction - that will be $300 please...

Besides talent, that is also called "being in the right place at the right time" also a key ingredient for success. Sometimes successful people overlook the luck involved.
Sorry I can't give you $300 even if I wanted to. I am living paycheck-to-paycheck because I am not "successful".

All of the following suck (and blow):
1. Being broke
2. People thinking that you're broke solely because you can't manage your money
3. Sappy success stories where "if you just did this and that" you would succeed. If it were that easy we would all be doing it.
4. Living paycheck-to-paycheck
5. Realizing that you are not getting younger (cliche but true)
6. Fighting anhedonic depression
7. Sometimes life in general

Yes, I know I'm a killjoy (and on the haven forum!) but whatever--I'm a lost cause anyway.

As a side note: anyone think it is interesting that "sucks" and "blows" can be either antonyms or synonyms depending on word usage. :)

Amen to that. Also:
8. Rich people treating you like property.
9. Potential dates rejecting you because you're broke (it's not really a loss, but it's depressing).
10. People thinking you're a criminal or an alcoholic/drug addict just because you're broke.
11. People not trusting you because they think you're gonna steal from them because you're broke.

Winning the lottery is "luck" - maximizing the value of what you have isn't. I actually had to work really hard for my "luck". If it wasn't pharma, it would have been something else...

Okay would you agree that it was a combination of all of these though:

1. You work hard.
2. You recognize you have a marketable skill. (insight most don't have)
3. You are able to socially influence people to get what you want. (not me, people sometimes have a hard time getting along with me)
4. You have a positive attitude and outlook in life. (better than myself probably)
5. You were in the right place at the right time. (luck)

I would argue that you are successful probably because of all 5. It just seems like you don't agree with #5--why not?

BTW I know I do #1 maybe nothing else that's why I am not successful.

I would agree with everything except #3.

Although I was very pro-active pitching my ideas to executives, I was extremely poor at convincing them to actually implement them - I was just some odd guy with no track record, no education, etc

My big "break" came when an executive was so desperate to make his numbers that he actually gave the green light to one of my proposals - it worked (duh!) and all of a sudden people started taking me seriously - you can't argue with cash.

If it wasn't for the fact that there was a very objective measure of my talents (sales) I wouldn't have gotten anywhere.

NTs can make a fortune on pure BS - I can't...

Hi, kiran. Looking at the videos at your blog, it seems that you are academically minded. Will it not be better if you look towards academia :)?

Not broke.

1. Find the one thing that you do better than most people.
2. Don't let someone else decide what to pay you.
3. Think outside the box - there are other ways to get ahead besides getting a promotion/raise.

I am an Aspie with no education and no family - if I can do it, anyone can...

Gee, that easy. Why didn't I think of that. <sarcasm>
Also, just because you can do it doesn't mean everyone can.

If you find your niche, you can.

I found myself a single mom, with no education. I was starting my college education, but also needed income. I started with some things I was good at (basic web design & graphic design).

Working in graphic design (no degree, just self-taught Adobe knowledge), introduced me to photography as a business. I already loved photography as a hobby. I got a "mentor" and learned the art better. I took a few courses as college electives (but much of this could have been learned from books and practice).

In the mean time, I continued my college education. Just began grad school. Upon doing my taxes a couple weeks ago, I realized I made more way doing wedding photography part time then I would using my grad degree. This doesn't include portraits & design work I do.

While I am happy to have the chance to get an education, I didn't need it. This is my last semester. I'm leaving grad school. Everything I did, I did from practice, determination, and skill.

It's a great career because I don't have to be overly social. It's flexible. I love what I do and my clients can pick that up.

That's an inspiring story :).

I've said it elsewhere, but I'll say it here too - I wrote this in an (apparently) misguided effort to be helpful - I am mortified by the thought that it may have inadvertently hurt someone instead - I am truly sorry and I won't mention the subject again...
