this is what i know for certain........the average dog on planet earth has 0 good years. 0 years of knowing love and safety. 0 years of not being afraid.

i am sorry for your loss. you gave rex 5 wonderful years. i'm certain of that.

i don't expect it to ease your pain but rex would not have traded 15 normal years for the 5 he had with you. i've spent a lot of time in animal shelters so i know heartache. seen a lot of dogs treated like crap their entire lives.

when it's time for you to bring another friend into your life, please consider adopting from an animal shelter. louie was a throw-away dog, owned by dog fighters. he was on his last day at our animal shelter when i adopted him. i was badly hurt and had to board him for several months. he has lived with me for 11 years now and is the only lifeform that i have truly loved. he is one happy dog. you can do the same for an animal shelter dog. there are millions just waiting to love you.

Thanks for all your kind words. I still miss Rex a lot :(

@ danandlouie, although Rex was a purebred dog, he was adopted from a shelter. A breeder couldn't keep him and dropped him off at a shelter when he was a puppy. I will definitely be adopting from an animal shelter again when it's time.

thank you meow 101, most people would be astounded by the number of purebred puppies/dogs in shelters. when breeders have puppies they can't sell, they only have 2 options. kill them or turn them into rescue groups / animal shelters. animal shelters get most of the critters, cheapest/easiest way out for the breeder. it's tragic the numbers that get put down simply due to overcrowding.

I'm so sorry you lost your Rex, Kate. It seems so sudden. I hope this means he didn't suffer. Just a bit of confusion and inconvenience before he left. My Toby (golden retriever) is also a purebred rescue. He has a thyroid condition, dry eyes and on-going problems with skin and ear infections that we have to stay on top of. Do you have plans for a memorial garden or a gravesite?

Breeders kill them too apart from all the suffering dog's undergo at the breeders? Heartless people those breeders!

I just want to be "that person" who has to say that not all breeders are evil. Some are responsible, knowledgeable and skilled. They understand the animals they're dealing with, treasure the lives under their care, are extremely cautious over who takes a puppy home with them, and love each and every one as a part of their own family. It's more than a business, it's a life to them. I know a few breeders like this and, not surprisingly, one is the daughter of another who learned all that it takes to be a breeder by watching her mother care for her dogs. Honestly, there should be some stricter regulations on who can and cannot be a breeder and greater freedom for animal control officers to be able to shut down puppy mills and animal abusers. Then the proper breeders will sail through without a problem and these criminals can be stopped. :(

I am probably going to plant a young tree and do a small memorial. I donated his body to the vet school so they can learn something from his unusual case. They're going to do an autopsy free of charge because it was such a weird case and they're going to get a copy of the results to me when they're available. Maybe some other dog won't have to die if they learn something...who knows?
