There is a 1 in 250,000 chance the asteroid Apophis will hit on April 13th 2036. It won't completely end the world, but potentially make things really suck for millions.

I'm crossing my fingers for a full Yellowstone eruption, wouldn't that be exciting! :)

Not really because that means I die.

I was semi-joking there.
But if I HAD to choose a way to die, I'd like to die from an asteroid impact or the eruption of a super-volcano.
I also think that something super dramatic like that would force those remaining alive to stop in their tracks and re-think the way society operates.

Apophis would actually only be a minor impact. It has been projected that it would possibly hit somewhere along a line going from siberia across the north pacific, just off the US west coast, then curving across the Caribbean. A Caribbean impact would cause the most damage.

Yellowstone, on the other hand, would dump 3-6 feet of ash as far away as europe and shut down agriculture worldwide for at least 10-20 years, maybe more. Half or more of the US would be completely devastated from pyroclastic flows.

I guess that's one of my more twisted aspie obsessions, the effects of large natural disasters. I am completely awe struck by the raw power of nature at her worst.

Well I cannot do anything if it does happen.........other then what I said I would do in my first post in this thread, in which case at least I would get to see something awesome before I died.

If you want a date to really worry about, worry about January 19, 2038. 3:14:07am (UTC), to be exact. 2^31 seconds after the dawn of the Unix Epoch at midnight UTC on January 1, 1970. January 1, 2000 was just a fire drill. January 19, 2038 is the Real Thing. The computers lots of people were so worried about back in 1999 couldn't have cared less about 1999 vs 2000, because Unix Epoch Time is how they REALLY keep track of dates. In 2038, the problems will be much, much worse than being forced to see dates like January 1, 19100.

Thanks for the heads-up. 8O
