you're over-reacting. you made a good video. you lost. it's not the end of the world.

i was a doctor and lost that over five tactless words. i felt my life was over. now i am married to a great guy and have a rewarding job. give it some time.

Others already made their masterpieces by my age. I fear these are my peak years and this is the best I will ever do.

If that's the case, I want to end it all now.

I just took a hammer and knife to my claymation sets and figurines.

Why? It may well be that what you did was not what the small panel of judges for this particular contest was looking for, but the next contest it might be. I know several people who are friends with a friend of mine who are musicians. They have all tried out for things like American Idol and failed. They didn't even get beyond the initial vetting. The thing is though, they still tried and are still trying. It's taken years but one of them just got a decent paying gig with traveling expenses paid to perform about 500 miles away. Why? He was persistent and didn't let all of the rejections stop him from pursuing his dreams. Now this doesn't mean he will ever get a recording contract but that's the way the business works. Heck, that's the way life works! I am a talented person with regard to technical things myself yet I still deliver pizza for a living at 38 (and have never had a girlfriend either). The difference is that I haven't decided to give up. I am returning to college this fall to try and finish the engineering degree I started in my teens.

As for you, I think it's a shame you ruined your work. What I would have done instead was submit it to animation companies that work in claymation as part of a resume and ask for a job. You may not be the star of the show right off but it would be a foot in the door of the industry. However, you have to have the right attitude. It may be that a thousand doors get slammed in your face but the 1,001st lets you in. Remember too that there are seven billion people walking the face of this planet, many of whom also have untapped talent. Yet, they manage to figure out how to have good lives despite not being part of the 0.0001% of humanity that ever gets their shot at 15 minutes of fame. Plus, fame is fleeting. How many artists are one hit wonders? How many formerly famous people wind up living in the gutter when society has wiped it's a*s with their lives and moved on to the next new thing? Not everyone has a long career. Even for those who do make it on a team or get an album on the carts there is no guarantee they will be able to repeat it. For every Michael Jordan there are hundreds, if not thousands of bench warmers.

It sounds like your not really enjoying the art your doing. I wonder if that is coming across in the art.

I love my art, but I seem to be the only one that does. And it f*****g kills me my work doesn't matter a damn.

Maybe if I was dead people would value it more.

I thought your stop motion claymation was lovely. I loved the Union Pacific guy with the moustache and I thought the music was really uplifting and professionally done. Please do NOT kill yourself, as other people have said you are still young and you have the chance to improve your work (not that it needs improving). Here is an address Neil Gaiman gave to a university class who were graduating:

Hope this helps. As I said please do NOT kill yourself, your work was great and you can only improve with time.

Okay, I realize that's the emotion talking because you've just invalidated everything I've told you already. I've been there...

Still, I'm glad it's your stuff you hurt instead of yourself.

I destroyed it because it was ugly and flawed and worthless.

I'm going to make something new. Something honest. Something special that I can be proud of. I had to destroy the old and make way for the new.

It took me 6 months to learn how to properply photograph a simple scene.

Trip after trip my pictures were rejected.

Then one day I figured it out, and started getting accepted.

Contests are always a throw of the dice. On any given day the judges could pick different winners. You need to get over not being picked.

Make something new, something that is exactly what you want to do. Don't compromise. Don't try to make what you think others will want to see. Make what YOU want to see. That's the only way to conect with people.

I've been rejected more times then I can remember, but I keep going. I've managed to have a decent career as a writer & musician, despite all the rejections. The minute I stopped trying to create what I thought others wanted, and created what I wanted instead, is when things really opened up.

BTW, your video was excellent and showed a lot of care and hard work. Keep it up!

I noticed that all the semi-finalists' entries featured the lyrics to the jingle actually being sung. Maybe that's what was missing from your piece.

What bugged me about most of those entries is that they featured the singers rather than the main purpose of UP Rail.

(The CG animation with the morphing train bugged me because they didn't even TRY to make it realistic... stupid wheels all over the place! The other ones were so bad they were painful to sit through.)
